RE:What Calibers Do You Use To Deer Hunt Besides The More Popular One's?

Would be interesting to see what members deer hunt with besides the more popular ones, 30/30, 30-06,243,270, etc.?

Especially interested in those shooting the lever action rifles.

I hunt pretty much exclusively with my papas 22-250. My graduation present to myself this year however will be a new rifle, probably a 308. As he gets older in age the less I want to drag it through the briars and whatnot and keep it for my kids one day.

Not a lever, but Cloningerba has a ruger .44mag carbine that is hands down the best woods rifle (shots <100 yards) i have ever seen.

many lever guns are available in the .44 mag cartridge that would work just as well. if i wanted a lever for a woods gun and didn't want a .30-30 or .35 rem, that's what i would go for.

now...if you may hunt bear then .45-70 is where it's at....but that much power is just punishing your shoulder if all you ever want to do is deer hunt.

Depends on my mood, 357 mag rifle, 25-06, 45/70. Next season will probably be my new to me and only lever gun a Winchester 94 in 30/30.

For years I used a 30-06 exclusively. When I finally was able to afford something else I went for a 300 WSM. Since then I have added a 7 MM Rem Mag, 7 MM-08, 35 Remington & 257 Weatherby Mag.

My wife asks me why I need so many different one's as they all kill deer the same level of dead. I then ask her why she has so many pairs of black shoes as there is only one shade of black........:)

Really depends on what how i feel, been known to take a 338lapua to the bean fields. In levers I have 308, 243, 30/30, 357mag, 44mag, 45Colt, 35, and 45-70 so really is a pain to decide at times. Have 7 308s and a host of other stuff in varied calibers. Could probably take a diff gun each sit if I felt inclined and while I enjoy them all there's a few that just feel right like my old Savage 99s.

My .44 Mag Marlin levergun is my go-to rifle, as I mostly hunt the woods. If I'll be on a field with longer shots, I'll use my bolt rifle.

I've hunted with and killed deer with 7x57 Mauser, 7mm Mag, 25WSSM, 7.62x39 as well as most of the standard fare like .308Win, .270Win, 30-30 and others. One rifle I really wish I had never traded was a Spanish Mauser that was built into a beautiful walnut stock that would throw 1/2" groups all day with good ammo. I do also want to get a nice Swedish Mauser (6.5x55mm) action built into a nice stock for mid range hunting as it is an amazing little cartridge...but I will most likely wind up with a 6.5 Creedmoor before that happens.

38-55, .356 Win., .338 Marlin Express,.308 Marlin Express and 45-70. All in Marlin levers. They're not just deer rifles though, they have a taste for varmints, too!

All of the deer rifles I currently own are standard ones, 270, 30-30, 30-06, and 2 308s. I'd love to have a Ruger RSI (not a Lever action but a cool gun) in 257 Roberts, a Marlin 338MX or a Savage 99 in 300Sav, 284 Win or 250 Savage though. My Browning Lever Action is a 308 and my buddy's is a 270WSM, his wife's is a 25-06. I love mine and they love both of theirs though.

Not owning ANY popular cartridges..I've used .25 Souper, .257 Ackley, 6.5x55, .218 Bee, .222 Rem, 7x57, .338 Win Mag (downloaded to .338/06)
8x57, 8mm/06, 7x61 Sharpe and Hart, .30 Gibbs, .30 ICL Mag, 6mm/303 EPPS, .270/08, .270 Mashburn, .270 Savage....most all built back in my Gunsmithing days.

BUT, what I've used the most in the last 25 yrs is a .41 Magnum revolver.

(although I think the OP meant "cartridges" not "calibers", which is how we've answered!)

I use my 257 Weatherby when hunting where shots may be longer, only shot a few with that caliber but not one has taken a step after being hit.

44mag and 6.8 spc are the only ones not on your list.

Those two in addition to 30/06, 300 mag, and 308. Depends on how I feel that day.

Looking hard at either HOPING to find a clean used older marlin in 35 or an older Marlin 45/70. Orrrr, pulling the trigger on a 458 SOCOM upper for my hunting AR

Used a .270 exclusively for years. But recently I've been using a Tika 7mm08 I got from Sugartown Taxidery killed 4 with it this season using Anwrican Whitetail 139 grain Interlock ammo. I've found a new "go to" deer rifle !
