Rifle Selection

I totally agree with bryguy and others about using good, solid mounts for any optics. However a cheap scope mounted solidly to a hard kicking rifle may be lucky to last long enough to be properly zeroed. Several times I've seen people with brand new setups (like a nice $900 rifle and $175 scope)- they get it on paper at 50 yards, back up to 100 and halfway through a group the entire erector system inside the scope lets loose (and this is on a .270 or 30-06, not a 300 or larger bore rifle). All of my rifles currently wear DZ, Leupold or Kimber bases and rings and I've never had a minute's trouble with any scope coming loose.

I completely agree with the nice rifle, nice scope concept. I am planning on spending the money for a worthy scope to make it a complete setup. What’s everyone’s thoughts on woodstock rifles?
Thank you all again for the help...

Good synthetic > laminate > wood > cheap synthetic

Of course, YMMV.

I agree and disagree slightly, ...a good synthetic or chassis is definitely better as far as mechanical accuracy is concerned as it can neither shrink or swell due to temp or humidity, but they are not considered aesthetically pleasing by most. Laminate or wood is really about the same either way in mechanical accuracy and looks better the wood better the looks, both need to be bedded for accuracy. A cheap synthetic is pretty much trash all the way around

Wood looks great and can be made pretty water resistant but IMO it needs to be pillar bedded and all the interior surfaces sealed or oiled heavily. I will say wood does feel much better in the hand on cold days then synthetic does.

That's a solid rifle, some may hate on the accustock but they're better than most stocks on rifles in that price range by far.

I had a couple of the accustock savages and they would shoot lights out

If you had your ideal caliber, make, and scope setup, what would it be? With all of the responses I’ve researched a lot more and looked at different rifles that I hadn’t originally..

This rifle (got mine New for $930) https://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/10FCPHS with this scope http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-viper-hs-t-4-16x44-riflescope-with-vmr-1-moa-reticle. 300wm is great round from 10 to 1000 yards and both the rifle and glass are capable of it. Can hunt any game in NA with the 300wm and while some might say it's overkill for NC deer it's common enough to find ammo any where you go. That stock is top notch and far better than what vast majority of rifles are sitting in. Accutrigger may take a lil getting used to but it's great once you do and runs comparable to $250 aftermarket triggers. Scope is excellent quality both for hunting as well as banging steel on the range and Vortex has amazing CS & warranty for life even if you got it used.
Now this is just my take as a rifle set up to do anything I'd want, long range shooting, hunting in NC or the Midwest for larger game.

that would depend, are you looking a single rifle to do everything or would you break it down further? a rifle for shooting out to 1k and over is going to be an entirely different beast then a rifle you would take on a mountain sheep hunt.

Does anyone have or know about the Christensen Arms Mesa rifle? Thinking about getting it in a 6.5 Creedmoor

They are excellent rifles, you'd be hard pressed to pick up a more accurate production rifle off the rack. They're not really popular here but are out west, I'd put them above a Sendero 700, in fit/finish and accuracy. I won't say they're more accurate than higher end savages but they are abit prettier and a lot lighter.

Keep in mind the old saying about opinions but this is what I would buy if looking for a rifle that would last me a lifetime. I havethe exact same set up and the quality of Bergara rifles is by far and away better than anything in the $500-$1500 price class. I can't say enough about the quality of Meopta scopes either. I like the fact is a KISS hunting rifle with everything you need and nothing you dont.

I own a Bergara in 6.5 creedmoore with a vortex 6.5-24x50

FFP scope that literally drives tacks. In my hands, a $10,000 rifle could not shoot better.
.19” groups @ 100 yds with factory superformance ammo. Great rifle, $699 on sale.
I also have a Ruger American predator in 6.5 creedmoore ($399 on sale) with a vortex 4-12x50 FFP scope that shoots consistent groups .35” @ 100 with factory ammo.

I have one in 22-250 and 243 as well. $349 each. Lasers.
Best bang for the buck, Ruger American.

I currently have 22-250, .243, 30-30, several .270's, 30-06, and two 300wsm's in my quiver. I am currently hunting with a Winchester SXR 300WSM and Browning A-Bolt 300WSM, for NC deer and typical NC hunting it is extreme overkill but I was curious in 2005 so I bought the A-Bolt in 300wsm I really liked it, long range capability, great knock down and accuracy and light recoil, later I got the Winchester SXR in 300WSM I really don't know why I continue to hunt with either of them other than the fact I just like them. I hunted with a .270 BAR for years and it was an awesome gun and caliber for anything I wanted to hunt. IMHO a shooter couldn't really go wrong with a 30-06 with bullet weights from around 100gr. up to 220gr. you can successfully hunt any big game animal in North America.
