Bleaching a skull

I found a perfectly intact possum skull. What type of solution do you guys use to bleach out your deer skulls?

Hydrogen peroxide. The brown bottle drugstore strength will work fine. Just be aware that possum skulls do not have the interlocking knit lines where bones meet like deer skulls have. You may get some separation and may have to glue back after the bones get dry.

DO NOT USE Chlorine Bleach!

What he said. QBD knows his way around a skull...so heed his warning and do NOT use chlorine bleach. Peroxide is the ticket.

Go to a beauty supply store and get the Hydrogen Peroxide gel, 30 or 40%. Works much better and faster than the diluted brown bottle stuff. Can paint it on with a brush.

BUT - whatever you do, don't tell the clerk what you are going to use it for. From personal experience, they may freak out and threaten to call the police. Just go in, ask for it and say your wife wants to be blonde.

There is a Dollar General in every single town (and former town) in NC. Might cost a dollar or two for the brown jug of Hydrogen Peroxide. Easy to get when drive past a General every day. Beauty supply stuff sounds great, but the brown jug was the easy route for me.
