Yellow Jacket Season Is In

Yep found the first one of the year this week as well. I was doing some trail maintenance with the bush hog and stopped to clear a poplar tree across the road. Unbeknownst to me, the tractor was about 2ft from their hole. I got away with only one getting me on the knee. I went back and took care of them that night.

I got hit by a black hornet after starting the mower last week. I'm sitting there after it hit a couple licks pushing the choke in, getting stung, and reaching to release the parking brake when he hit me behind the ear. I kicked the snot out of him when he came back for round 2, but I'm going on a nest hunt tomorrow. Armageddon is approaching for him and his kin...

Gassed the two in the front beds, looked the next day and there were 3 more. Think one was just the same one with multiple entrances. The others were a good ways away. That makes 4 or 5 depending on how you count. There was a pile of em by my AC unit where the condensation tube drains water. Be careful out there, I think they’re going to be even more ill then normal with this hot dry weather.

One year ago I stepped out on the front porch to tend the humming bird feeders, and got wrapped up with them They even followed me back into the house before I could close the door. Got several bites and stings (yes, yellow jackets can bite and sting at the same time). Finally figured out under what part of the porch they had built their nest. I used traps and spray, and eventually recovered about 90 bodies. This ordeal lasted for a couple weeks, and prevented house entry from the front, and any use of the porch. ,

I have had them several times in the ground and that is easier to deal with, if you can find the second hole. This porch thing was a first for me, and much more difficult to address with just narrow gaps between the porch boards to work thru.

I go in with a can of the hornet spray that shoots 10ft. In my other hand I have a gallon or two of strong mix of Bifen. Spray the hole and any that come out with the hornet spray and then stick the nozzle of the Bifen in the hole, lock the spray on, and just pump it up until empty. The can of spray will knock down any that try to come around. The Bifen will take care of the nest.

Just found my first this evening. Went to check the oil in a car we had not driven in about a week. Popped the hood latch and they started swarming. Got tagged once in the calf. Stayed around to figure out where they came from. Looks like they have built a nest somewhere behind the drivers side headlight. Not sure of a plan of attack yet. Oil did not get checked. Any ideas on getting rid of them in this location?

Spray at night. If that doesn’t work then 7 dust but wouldn’t want to turn on AC and have 7 pumped through the car.
