WRAL had a little segment about Lake Mattamuskeet this morning. What is the old saying "any publicity is good publicity"? They led with "NC's biggest lake is in trouble". Wonder how many folks watching were shocked that they were not talking about Jordan?

I'd have been shocked if they meant Jordan, since Norman is the largest in NC.
Matt is the largest 'natural' lake in NC though... certainly the largest to go from duck magnet to duck desert...

Well. Yes.
By that standard, Phelps Lake would be the biggest natural lake in NC.
Lake Norman would be the biggest reservoir, with Mattamuskeet 2nd.

But, that's not how NC says it is.
Some great big puddles all around.

you'd be wrong

Mattamuskett is a natural lake
yes it was drained (attempted) at one time,,, but it holds water naturally
unlike norman, jordan, etc

and I can't help what folks want to call things

I was just referring to a large portion of the WRAL audience that have probably never seen, or heard of for that matter, Lake Mattamuskeet. I teach Earth and Environmental Science in the Sandhills and most of my students have never heard of it and therefore have no idea where it is or know anything about it.

Mattamuskeet has a dam and should be drained periodically like any other impoundment and managed for moist soil vegetation.

attempts were made to drain it for farmland
Effort was given up
