I'm still a fan of true hardwood. By that I mean 3/4" t&g. Engineered flooring comes in handy sometimes when placeing over certain conditions but on a conventional framed floor I feel that hardwood is better. Make sure the plywd subfloor is 3/4" thick. I would not put hrdwd down on just 1/2" subfloor and regardless run it across the joists. I have just seen a lot of problems with engineered flooring. A good quality prefinished would be my recommendation or the traditional that you have to sand and finish. Its more inconveinent though during install. If you have problems in say 2-4 years the style of engineered may not be available to make repairs. I have ran into that before.
