Why can’t teachers protest on a Saturday?

Because this way on May 1st, it causes the school systems to have to shut down, and it inconveniences those who make the policies.

Because whenever Mark Jewell and the NCAE plan something, it's always idiotic. This coming from a 20 year teacher who has NEVER been a member of the association.
I believe their intentions are in the right place. However the execution of their plans may not always be the best.

“Inconvenience”?

Lol. Paid day off and no operating expenses incurred by the system (that day).

The only people that are inconvenienced are the parents of the children. They have to find child care etc....just because teachers want to "protest". I am sorry but I knew my pay wasn't going to be the greatest when I decided to be a teacher. I had former teachers try and talk me out of it. I knew what I signed up for and so did every other teacher that is going to be at that "protest". IF teachers really are putting students first, in MY opinion every one of them would be in their class teaching that day and waiting til the summer to rally!!

NC is 40th in education so the question becomes does it really matter if they take the day off? Apparently even when they are at work they aren’t that effective.
and on the local news this morning they were talking about devoting million of dollars to making sure the people that were having "trouble graduating" actually graduated. LOL...wasn't that Obama's solution to every problem, just throw money at it? We see how well that worked.

Exactly, more money is not the answer....education starts in the home and parents must have a want to for their child. A lot of parents these days have no expectations for kids. Every year it gets a little worse. Until the root of the problem is focused on, the system will continue to be broke. That is why groups like the NCAE, NAACP, ACLU, really gripe me. They complain, complain and complain but really do nothing to solve the problem. Band-aids don't work all the time.

if you want the students' performance to increase, quit with all the EOGs and let the teachers teach

Hey. There it is.
There’s the solution.
Let them do their damn job.
Reward those that perform well.
Quit rewarding those that do not.
It’s absurd that a new teacher isn’t eligible for a performance based salary increase. Equally as ridiculous that a piss poor teacher continues to gain salary increases; regardless of their performance.

Those that do the job well should reap the benefits associated.
Those that do not, find a new career.

EOG's are so embedded now I worry that they will eventually become the "norm". I was hoping Devos was going to shake things up radically, but I haven't heard a peep.

Honestly, I think GWB was one of the worst Potus's ever regarding education. Then his successor just kept it as is.

Is this a union rule? We have a union at Ft. Bragg and it was the same thing. I couldn't give merit raises to my top performers unless they also went to more senior people. Pain in the ass.

EOG and other standardized tests are the direct result of taxpayers and politicians wanting teacher accountability.

It's hard to quantify what makes a great teacher. New batch of kids each year makes test scores a less reliable indicator of effective teaching. One teacher is high maintenance and "works" the guidance department to get all the "good" kids, the ones who are going to learn no matter who is leading them. Another teacher gets a large amount of kids with learning disabilities and a history of behavioral problems. The teacher in the second scenario may have actually worked harder and taught more effectively, though test scores don't compare.

Teachers do the best they can with unbelievable challenges every day.

That is exactly why I love working for the principal I work under now. He bucks the system and leaves us alone so we can teach. He says I hire people who know what they are doing. In 3 years we have gone from an F school to being a C, almost made a B. Now, our county sends everyone to our school to see what we are "doing". I politely told one central office employee I was just doing my job. You should have seen the look on her face.

The education industry will find one statistic that shows the worst performance, and use that to extort more money from the taxpayers. After adjusting for cost of living, NC is right in the middle, about #25 in spending. So the next time you hear that we're at the bottom in results, then ask them why the taxpayers are paying for #25 and getting #40 results?

They want you to think that pouring more money into education correlates to better results, like pouring more gasoline into an engine makes it run faster. California, New York, and New Jersey have the highest per-student spending and some of the worst results. Only one state in the top ten for spending is in the top ten in results (Connecticut).

There is a plan in place that by 2023 all EOGs will be gone. Our principal sent an email outlining all of the testing changes.

The lad(ies) doth protest too much, methinks.

To answer your question, imo, it boils down to public sympathy. What they forget though, is how bad they piiss off the politicians and a large number of the citizens of NC. It actually hurt them last year, and I don't see it being much better this year. The ones making and passing the budget do not like being held hostage or to be portrayed as giving in to bullies......and that is what their attempt is.

All I got to say on it is “fine, I’m all for teacher pay raises - you have two choices

1 - tell me who to take the money from
Or
2 - tell me who’s taxes to raise”

My daughter is a teacher - kind of like joining the military - you don’t do it for the high pay

They should give tests at the beginning of the year and tests at the end. The same test more/less. The difference in scores reflects the teachers effectiveness.

To fuly understand the timing I think we must remember that May 1st (May Day) is/was the big celebration of socialism in Russia. Now consider the socialist adgenda being tought is the schools.

I was a state employee for 11 1/2 years and thought the same thing.
