What to do in February?

Crowfest!! A buddy and I used to throw the shotguns, caller and a few decoys in truck and go. We hit a lot of places and most folks have no problem letting ya shoot crows if ya ask first. Like others have said a couple rods in vehicle and can go after Specks, trout or perch.

If you like to bass fish that is the time of year the big females start feeding up for the spawn. Jerk baits and jigs will get you bit. I catch lots of good fish on the Rattlin' Rogue by Smithwick.

February is crappie season. Or rabbit season. Or preserve quail. Maybe stripers with a little bit of traveling.

My brother in law sent me a text last night and said "Get your butt down here"....

Yep, he is a good one!!! Gonna try to get a couple of days and scoot down there and see if I can give him a hand...He lives in Little Washington, don't know where he is catching them but I'll be it's within 30 minutes of Washington... :)

Yep, come on to the Pamlico...everybody else is. Counted 53 boats in one Bay one day last week. I would take my 3 days and cash and slip up to Md./Del. and go snow goose hunting. Just got back and left bunches up there.

I would suggest that if you are married or in a serious relationship, you should take her on a nice in-state trip. It's a thank you for all the weekends you were away hunting.
I would but the wife is doing this for me as a gift. I guess she realized how lucky she is 😂. Although she did say something about Mexico being a good place for me and the guys to go on a DIY duck hunt.

February is still a hot time for coyotes, tail end of their breeding season. and from what I understand lots of feral hog contamination in NC. Sure a google could find a place for hogs and probably also yotes. If nothing else swap places with me and my upcoming surgery and I'll gladly take your place and find some hunting to do. LOL.

Hopefully your surgery goes well. Coyotes are no fun for me anymore ( well I do get a smile when I shoot one) . I have over a hundred traps hanging in the shed that haven't seen dirt in two years. Beaver trapping is getting old also as I have to do that year round.

Talked to my buddy who lives near Boone but bluebirds to Fla in the winter. LOL. When I'm there we fish together. He is in Fla and doing some fishing. He said he had been three times but only caught two bass on one of the trips. I told him his problem was that he did not have me there to show him how its done or either he wasn't holding his mouth right.

There is a story behind holding your mouth right. As a youngster my grandfather took me fishing with him a lot. There are many memories and stories there, way to many for now but as I grew older I came to a couple of conclusions. He was much older by that time and his eye sight wasn't as good as it once was. He was not a rich man by any means. In those days a back lash was worked out, you did not chop off the line, discard and put on new line. So I'm now convinced that he took me along to work out those back lashes and I assure you I got plenty of practice. Wouldn't change that for the world now.

Now for the holding your mouth right story. Remember I was just a boy. Boys at that age had zero patience. My grandfather could sit on the bank of a river and fish all day. His theory was "they gotta eat some time". As that young boy I think I had two thoughts only. One was the dang fish were supposed to bite almost as soon as the bait hit the water and if they didn't I must have cast the bait in the wrong location so there was nothing else to do but drag it in and cast it to a better location.

My grandfather left his bait in until the fish at least had time to locate it and bite so naturally he caught fish. One day I asked him "Grandpaw how come you are catching fish and I'm not"? He sat there for a minute as if thinking and said "I guess it could be that you just aren't holding your mouth right" then he went back to watching his fish pole. Well if it took holding my mouth right I was gonna catch fish and in order to do that I had to mock him. You cannot imagine the faces, the contortions he was making and I was doing everything I could to copy every contortion he made.
Every so often he would turn his face completely away from me I'm now sure because he could not keep from laughing any longer. As soon as he could control his laughter he would look over at me to make sure I was watching and then he would again look at his fish pole and start the contortions again until most of the time he would continue for a long time and suddenly he would get a bite and catch a fish.

The funny thing was that I was so intent on watching and mocking him I would forget to "chunk and wind" my own pole I too began to catch fish. I was convinced that the way you held your mouth actually had something to do with making the fish bite. Wasn't until I was much older and he was gone that I realized what he was doing. What I would give for just one more day fishing with him.

If you had a three day weekend near the end of February and a little cash to spend what would you like to do in NC. I'm in this situation and I don't know of anything I would enjoy. I'm an outdoor type of person and most season's are closed by then .
It just depends on the weather.
Great suggestions on predators and crows. But that's not likely a three day affair.
If you can live with last minute set ups a trip to the coast may find some good action on something fishing wise but you never know for sure.
Small lakes and ponds could provide the best easiest bass fishing of the year or not depending on the weather.

The only truly cant miss february activity I have found is a gambling junket. They'll take your money regardless of the weather. :)
You mentioned NC (which is fine as we have two casinos) but you can get to vegas cheaply now and can always be entertained by some good shows as well as play. We've done that the last two Februaries and it's a lot of fun.

Just before Christmas I road to Kinston early in the morning. Counted 80 boats on the road, there and back to Pamlico.

not a bad idea, and use www.vrbo.com to find decent places to stay

BUT, maybe she would like to go on a guided quail-pheasant-chukar hunt at 1 of our hunting preserves in NC.
