What kind of bird is this?

Appears to be a hawk, possibly a juvenile red-tail or red-shouldered hawk. If it was walking down the trail and you were able to catch it, so is just about any predator. You can report it to DNR and they may respond.

That protection obviously didn't help it thus the predicament it found itself in.
