What caused this

Just a guess as it looks to be a blown 22 case, but not 100% positive without a full case pic. It would appear to have somehow fired out of battery.

My bet is it fired out of battery.

Slightly out of spec ammo, or chamber might be a possibility
Looks like out of battery.
Did it fire from the firing pin hitting it or the slide hitting it. A bolt or slide hitting it when a bullet is bent in the case and causes it not to close will do that.

I'd have a look at the extractor as well, if it's bent it can cause a out of battery ignition of a rim fire.

I didn't shoot it. It was Remington bulk ammo. I think it was actually shot.

My opinion is, it's the ammo, not seating correctly for some reason.

I've had many issues with bulk Remington and federal .22 ammo. damaged rounds out of the box. I'd try some reliable ammo
