Western Oklahoma Public Land Birds

Little late but I’m missing Turkey hunting so what the heck.

I’ve been turkey hunting hard for about the past 4 years and fell in love with it. My best friend and I decided we wanted to do a grand slam.

so after a little research on the internet and calling some wildlife biologist where rio grande turkeys live. We headed to western Oklahoma for 10 days in a Nissan Rogue. Camping stuff, freeze dried meals two shotguns and a whole lotta hope.

we got there three days before season and started scouting hard walking over 15 miles a day each in some rough terrain. (Whoever said Oklahoma is flat lied). It took most of these days to figure out what these birds were doing. With very limited numbers of birds we knew we’d have to work hard!! We watched one follow the same path for a couple days with some hens and knew that would be the one we went after first. So we dug a hole into the side of a dirt hill to conceal my body.
Sure enough opening day he came close enough and 30 minutes after the season had started I laid down a public land RIO GRANDE TURKEY at 61 yards!! After all the work day 1 of season and we had a bird down. We never called at this Turkey.

now it was time for my buddies. We had another bird that we knew where he was. So we started after him. 3 days later this weary old bird wasn’t giving into our tricks. Feeling defeated and really exhausted from the trip we would ride the roads mid day calling. Around 11am we struck a bird up from private. Got out got setup and this bird came sprinting into the smallest piece of public we had seen and my buddy got one on the last day too!
It’s a trip that’ll never be forgotten! With everything gas oil changes, food and license out there. This whole trip was done for $600 a person. You can do it!
