Type of tree

Does anyone know what type of tree this is? It's in my front yard and the tops appear to have died but the lower branches are still showing green leaves. I'm trying to figure out if I can cut the dead part off without killing it but need to know what type it is so I can research it more.

Dogwood. Anthracnose will cause them to die back. Couple other things as well.

Justin knows his trees for sure. Not even an easy peasy on this one? Even I knew it was a dogwood. Are you an arborist or in the tree removal business? Just curious how you gained your knowledge.

Well you ain't gonna do it with a dogwood that's for sure.

Dogwoods are about the worst for "half-dying". A bunch of them are half dead half their life.

Justin, What do you do about that. Do you cut the dead off and hope for the best or is this tree on its last leg?

You can cut it, but leaving it won’t hurt. Don’t cut any live tissue.

It's a dogwood . You can tell by it's "bark" .

Thanks for all the replies. We actually thought it was a dogwood but not knowing much about trees I googled it and it didn't look like most of the photos that came up so I wasn't sure. Now to figure out if I can save it or not.
