Today is the day all fishermen must register their harvested fish

I predict an unmitigated disaster amongst the older crowd that catch a ton of fish, but use a phone for making phone calls only. That crowd isn't registering crap online. Another complete fiasco implemented by the idiots "managing" our fisheries.

Lets see how well the cooperation is on the commercial side. I'm predicting no changes there. We all know how well that has worked in the past.

The part where you must report when your vessel gets back to the dock is going to be tricky. I fish a few places with no cell service. Never thought I'd see the saltwater fishing regs get so messy

"those without immediate access to a smartphone, tablet or computer may print a paper report card from the DMF website"
Might could've worded this part better

I think the paper report card has to be confirmed online by midnight on the day the fish were taken. These senior citizens like my Dad aren't going to do this. Not even close to trying.

Agree with all the concerns above regarding enforcement and participation. My parents can't even grasp the concept of their TV having streaming service apps, or why they would need to change apps to watch a different football game instead of just changing the channel. No way my dad is going online to report that he caught and ate a few trout.

My initial thought is that "if you want less of something, you make it more cumbersome and kill the joy in it with red tape".

Since when did "recreational" fishing become a bureaucratic chore? Yesterday I guess...

But even that must be reported electroncially. This whole concept is riduculous. And it also requires negative reporting. For example, if you keep one red drum you have to also report that you did not keep any of the other species.

My dad is also a senior, he will be 78 this month. We fish together most every weekend except when I am hunting and then he fishes by himself. Even if he would be willing to comply with this BS there is no way I could ever explain it to him in a way that he would understand.

I will not be participating in the foolishness. The man lives right across the street from me and I'm still not doing it. I will not be a part of it. I follow every law and have bought every license for them to waste the money. It's high time a new group of like minded people ride into Morehead City and take over. What we have is a broken ass system with a bunch of paid off politicians.

I'll add one more wrinkle to this messy situation....
The ONLY phones it will currently work on are iPhone as they have yet to adapt the platform for use with the android system.
They're 'working on it'.... no date as to when that will take place.

One of my hunting/fishing partners fishes a lot on the sound and backwaters. He still uses a flip phone and has no way of accessing a web site. Our camp is only half mile to 2 away from the ramps we typically fish out of so I can tell you now there’s no way he will worry about this. I’ll be curious just how stringent marine patrol will be “enforcing” this debacle.

Report harvest? Heck, that's easy...according to THEM, we can't legally harvest (keep) anything!...so, ZERO.
Basically, they want the fishing regulations to be so aggravating that rec fishermen just give up because it isn't worth the hassle.

Wow, I thought this debacle was bad before, thanks for that info. This is an example of just how bad a state government regulation can be.

I was thinking about this last night. What is stopping people from making fictitious harvest reports to drive up the recreational harvest totals?

If a group of folks turned in daily harvest results with 5-6 family members on the boat, especially kids with no licensing, they could significantly overstate the harvest of every single species without wetting a hook.

I think this "reporting" is going to be more garbage than anything. It seems ripe for abuse on the recs. I looked at the commercial requirements and they stay exactly the same as they have been. They have no new regulations, or have to make any changes. It's all trip ticket related and trip tickets only get made if the fish is sold to a seafood dealer. Total scam on the recs if you ask me.

Trivia question
Has there ever been a fish reg that will be ignored more than this one?
Just a word of warning.
They’ll Sample to see the level of compliance and from that extrapolate their numbers.
Recs imo would be truly stupid to inflate their catch numbers. It’ll bite them if they do.
Personally I hope this dies a quick death. Overkill doesn’t do it justice.

So do they same as a commercial fisherman to increase their catch.

It’s a no win. Inflated numbers, cut the limits, keeping too many. Deflated numbers, not enough of the resource, cut the limits.

I don't think Recs would inflate their catch numbers. But I do think that Comms people could over inflate the recreational catch by reporting false trips and limits. The data entry required on the rec side is very vague. Easy to manipulate looking at it.

There is no way for the Recs to do the same to the Comms crowd because seafood buyers won't buy from private individuals, and even if they did, they wouldn't issue a trip ticket, because there is no commercial license to use. Therefore, no impact on comms totals.

Add to that of the nearly 6000 commercial license holders 60% don’t even report a trip ticket. So 3600 don’t even report a trip ticket but hold a commercial license.

Par for the course implement something that doesn’t work. I have android I’ll be waiting with bated breath for it to be fixed.

1-drum,1-gray trout, 1-flounder(in season) 3-slot specks and they are worried about what the Recs catch. You have to have a stellar day across multiple species to keep enough for a meal.
