Once when I was younger we were shooting at our county sheriff's personal range at his house. We shot that m855 from a 20" AR at 100 yards at a 1" thick steel plate and it almost punched through (never did) leaving dimples/bulges on the back-side of the plate. Shot the same plate with my BAR 30-06 165 gr. and it blew about a 2" hole straight through... If I were ever in the position where I wanted to defeat armor, I would want a 7.62 of some kind. I remember they made some steel-core AP for the m1 Garand back in the day.
Yes as I look back I know we shouldn't have been shooting at steel-plate because of risk of ricochet, but it left a lasting impression of how powerful a regular old deer rifle is.
