Six Pointer
Tagged out yesterday in Anson county - 1st bird of about 30 with a shotgun(mainly bowhunt) but the hunt was EPIC - 1st the day started off with minimal gobbling - heard 6 gobbles all morning and most were on the property but decided to stay put and wait instead of going after.
Saw a hen fly down into the field and was optimistic some toms would follow. It eventually happened but not the way anticipated
Watched several longbeards, in a field on property off limits - chasing and carrying on for over an hour - The would not respond or come any closer and were content feeding. The toms left and headed back towards property i can hunt, I stayed put until Noon. Since I was bowhunting i decided to move my blind where the toms were headed but also had 20 gauge in tow.
Probably 300 yards from my original set-up and was in process of setting up to come back after lunch, there was no need. I spotted a Tom 200 yards out strutting. Dropped down in logging road and call lightly , no response , repeated this scenario several times and the Tom wasn't budging until: I was laying prone in leaves and started lightly scratching the leaves... that was the ticket, he started gobbling and would gobble every time i scratched the leaves , I got to my knees and backed away from him scratching the leaves as I went , came in on a string the sound of scratching leaves and once he cleared some thick stuff , I got to my knees and shot him with a 20 gauage winchester sxp , longbeard 6's and a carlson choke. Sometimes you have to get creative and was back at truck by 1pm. Have a guy runs a shop for me in Jackson, TN and leaving in the morning to head there for a few days got the bow and blinds packed but also have that little 20 gauge riding along.
