Squirrel Parasites

Cooking and eating wise, are there any issues with parasites in squirrels during the spring hunting season in May? I've seen some nasty lookin things on them before, and I don't want to get anyone sick.

I am guessing unless you get real lucky the amount you will harvest unless you will be cooking for a family of one you won't be preparing a bunch of meals.

The most common one is the bot fly larva ( also known as warbles, wolves), and they are contained in the skin so in answer to your question, no, they are not dangerous to consume.

Point taken. I meant average man

Just joshing

This was 6 grey squirrels and made three real nice meals

We only hunt tree rats January & February. We usually assume 3 squirrels per person if you are eating them off the bone. If you bone it out, might take 4 per.

Mainly it’s called a 16 year old moose that lives in my house and consumes everything; utilities, food, time, internet bandwidth, etc. if I make it easier for him to eat he eats a lot more.

Oh I get that kind of issue

My “why is that” was referring to needing more squirrels if boned out

Understood, if he doesn’t have to pick the meat around the bones he tends to consume more. Can eat quicker, thus higher volume.

We also find meats taste better on the bone.

Speaking of Squirrels, don't forget 2025 Spring Squirrel season is 5/12-5/26 on private land only.

I'm missing the first part of it due to this boondoggle (life is rough :mosh:) but plan to go after a few during the last few days when I get back

I'll pass on eating the Warble, whether dangerous to eat or not! 🤢 They will come out of the upper layer of skin quite easily after a bit of slithering & squirming. BTW, the nasal bots in deer are not dangerous to eat either. I'll eat only if I am in dangerous survival mode.

Didn't mean to imply that the bot larva could or would be eaten....YUCK! I have eaten fried MAENG DA in Thailand but so does everyone in the country and it hasn't killed them yet.
