SPACE JUNK: Half a Century After Launched, Decommissioned Soviet Spacecraft Will Fall Back to Earth This Week – Most Populated Cities in the Planet Are on Its Deadly Trail

< SNIP >
For half a century, lost Soviet satellite Kosmos 482 circled in the Earth’s orbit after the rocket propelling it failed to send it to Venus to fulfill its mission. Now it will crash back on Earth – 1,100 pounds of space junk expected to hit our planet anywhere between May 9 and May 13.

An astronomer has at this point calculated roughly where it might land, and all of the world’s most populated cities are directly in its ‘firing line’.

I think he needs to do a little more calculating on the potential landing areas. He currently has literally half of the earth in his estimated hit zone. All of Africa, all of South America, most of the US, Most of Europe and Most of Asia.

I've seen much better predictions from the weather man.

He does have a pretty broad path for sure.....hopefully it'll either burn up before reaching Earth or land in an Ocean

This (below) surprised me....

“Scientists now believe that an object making its way towards Earth at 17,000 mph is Kosmos 482’s landing module, the final missing piece of the probe.”

They know this thing is going to crash into the earth.....but, also don't know what it is? No photos?

I think it's unlikely it burns on re-entry. It was designed for the heat of Venus, apparently. 1 meter wide and 1,100 pounds is a big ol wallop if it hits land!
