South Dakota Pheasant 2025

Eight Pointer
6 of us departed NW Greensboro at 0600 this morning (10/24) for Stickney SD. Hunting Monday-Wednesday then head back. Making it an adventure going out, a few stops along the way. My hunt group been together since 1988, one turned 70 last year, one retired FD last year and I can see FD retirement coming, barring no more surprises. Have our grown kids( 23-33) along and some flying in Sunday. 10 in total. First time for all of us. First stop, little bourbon sipping in Kentucky this afternoon!

Day 1 made it to Mt. Vernron, Illinois. I was DD after bourbon sipping since can’t drink anymore. Passed some fields getting prepped for planting, thought I was in Duplin Co, never mistake that manure smell……Tomorrow the St. Louis Arch and then on west to KC. Then turn N to SD.

Day 2. My second stop at the St. Louis Arch, went up this time. Awesome view. Hammered on down and stopped in Souix City, Iowa. Shopped at Scheels a bit and then went to supper. Guy at Scheels recommended Prime Time in Hinton, IA. Good call. Head out for airport pick-up in Souix Falls at 10:30am. Then to Mitchell SD for a visit before the lodge.

Day 3 made the airport pick-up, hit the Scheels. Trekked west for visit to Mitchell then on to lodge. After meeting staff and unloading, lit out for a beer run. Gravel road from lodge out, several birds ran/flushed from ditches. Only second time seeing wild pheasants. Ready for some birds tomorrow.

Had a bit of light rain starting out. Had three yellow labs, Beth, Rip and Jimmy, yes Yellowstone names! Walked corn and Milo strips, some missed shots but managed 15 Pheasants and a Prairie Chicken. This was more fun than I had imagined!! We talked some serious trash about each other’s shooting. Already talking about next year. Two more days of this, gonna be some sore legs!!

ETA: After getting my BPS 28ga at Christmas, bought ammo for it and dropped 2 with it today. Liking the 28, think it’s gonna get me back into reloading.

Short day today, we got 18 on first Milo strip. Hit two more blocks, limited by 11:30. The hang out spot at lodge has a free standing wood stove, we kept it stoked and chilled. One more hunt tomorrow then head east.
Sounds like a good time. I’m sure the stories around that wood stove were the best part.

Day 3( last day) was bittersweet. My wife and one other were along and joined us to walk along last day. Jumped 30 birds in first Milo strip. Watched son and daughter on wings, they made some good shots, son got to rush one in grass next to strip, dropped him quick, O/U 28! The entire trip has been a blast. Currently in Waterloo, Iowa, tour the John Deere museum then Kentucky bound.

We arrived back home at 5:30am Friday morning (Halloween). I’m still sorting and cleaning up gear. I will post some our logistics costs for those thinking about a similar trip. Played all day Saturday in a charity softball tournament so been crazy since getting back.

So here is some of the breakdown and how we did it. Our way wasn’t based on drive out, hunt, come back. We had some stops for tourist things to do.
We rented a 30’ RV so that we could go in 1 vehicle and have plenty of room. No trying keep 2 or more vehicles together. Also no one stacked 3,100+ miles on their vehicle(s). The gas was around $1,100, 8.5avg mpg. So two trucks with avg mpg of 16 would have burned the same. So $200 each on gas. Everyone put in cash ahead so no one paid more for gas than another.
The RV rental was ~$1,200, so again $200 each. We did find an unlimited mileage code so that was HUGE!! Now we did stay in a hotels some each way but we wanted that comfort, could have done rest area stop/sleep to save……or just drove straight.
We bought and packed food for the ride so not hitting restaurants along the way eating up time, ate/snacked as ya wanted. We did supper at a restaurant.
The outfitter was lodging, food, hunt, bird processing for 3 days with tax and tip(10%) was $2k. There are a variety of lodges that can do more or less based on your wants.
For those with the bug can find tons of public land and/or door knock for “free” hunting.
I encourage anyone that wants to do something different to take the step and just do it, life’s too short. Our way doesn’t fit everyone’s way but if your on the fence reach out with questions, I’ll try answer best I can. This was time with family and friends I’ll cherish forever.

I'm glad ya'll had a great trip. Any out of state hunt will be full of memories, but one of that distance, with a good group of people, to an area that is a totally different landscape is one you will remember for a very long time. It is worth the cost and time to make it happen. The only question is what game species and where to go. I know big game gets a lot of attention, but birds are a lot of fun, and something you can't hunt around here.
