On WMA lands the practice of fanning or reaping it is prohibited. Fanning/reaping is defined as hunting or stalking wild turkeys while holding or using for hunter concealment any of the following items: a tail fan, a partial or full decoy with a tail fan, or a tail fan mounted to a firearm. Tail fans include those made of real or synthetic feathers or an image or likeness of a tail fan applied to any material (Reg. 123-51). This regulation does not apply on private land.

Yeah this is more than safety issue while that is part of it they have history of being a turkey state and after years of high numbers of tags and high harvest they hit that "decline in numbers few years ago " and are acting on it We'll see how this turns out with all their restrictions. If you look at Arkansas it scares everybody how low numbers can really go in really not that long of period. And I don't think any state is immune Heck even the glorious state of Kansas has learned how fragile the birds are they are now having more meetings about cutting more fall zones and adding zones to a 1 bird limit in spring.

Not my fault SC is more "progressive" on turkey management than NC anymore.

No funny stuff or "pot stirring".

At one time most (not all) SC counties had a ridiculous 5 bird limit.

SC is actually trying to do things and are doing things to improve their turkey hunting.

This sure wouldn't affect me. I wouldn't even consider using any kind of a decoy on public land in SC or NC. An accident waiting to happen.

I got no problem with a deke on public even though I rarely ever use one the 2 shootings I know of last spring in states I hunted were with dekes on private land. I'm all for not allowing reaping on public but not so much for safety as saving dominant birds lives till later in season after they get lot breeding in. In my personal opinion there is to much breeding not getting done by time season starts in western NC. Now rest state may not be so I couldn't say

In SC public land (WMA) is controlled by DNR. Private land there is controlled by elected officials. This doesn't always benefit wildlife or the hunter, but I like this rule.

Agree with turkeyfoot. Im glad to see them put an end to it, and I could care less about the safety issue. You wanna strap a fan to yourself, go for it.
Im just pleased that more gobblers will carry over. Too many gobblers are being killed by folks that couldn't kill a bird any other way (too fidgety to sit over corn ?). There is just something about that fan that they cant resist. I know that all toms don't react the same way, but if a bird has one ounce of dominance in him, a fan will kill him.

But one must also remember that we aren't so far removed from a time when turkey hunters wouldn't hunt spring birds because they felt it was too easy and the birds were too stupid whilst rutting. In most areas of America the turkey hunting culture was of a fall hunting only mindset.

Call me a purist...i'll take the heat I guess.

Baiting, reaping, etc are for those that are desperate for the kill. True, we all Turkey hunt to be successful, but whatever happened to just hunting for the simple memory of taking a Gobbler one on one on his terms. There is way too much competition and commercialism nowadays.
