This is a great thread. I've got an old Model 1895 Winchester that I would like to equip with a sling. The step-by-step photos of the buttstock installation is really helpful. However, I would really like to see step-by-step photos of the slip knot (like is on the Montana sling) for the front of the sling. Do these exist anywhere?

Thanks

I’ll see if I can find the pics. I don’t know why they wouldn’t be there anymore. They were posted through Tapatalk.

They were the broken link pics in the beginning of the thread. Don’t know where they went.

For some reason the first pics of the adjustment part came back up. At least on my phone. I didn’t re load them. Dunno.

For some reason the pictures showing how to tie the slip knot dont show up, I have been trying to figure out how to tie it but cant figure it out; I just recently got a 336 and want to make one of these slings for it.

Also looks like the majority of the pics are broken again.

I'm glad this thread was revived. I had forgotten about it. I never got around to making a sling for my Winchester 1894. It turned 100 years old this year so I have plans to take it hunting.

Procrastinating is on my list of things to do. I did appreciate your detailed instructions. I may reach out to a coworker who works with leather all the the time.

Wow 100 years! Thats pretty cool! The marlin I just recently purchased was manufactured 1995, not quite as old but as long as it aint a 2008 or newer im happy.

Old family gun passed down from generation to generation. I also have a 1923 Winchester Model 12 12-gauge. I don't know the age of my brother's two inherited guns but he has a Winchester 1886 .33 WCF and the same shotgun as mine in 16-gauge. I'm going to assume those two were also bought in the 1920s.

If you can’t get it from that video, I can’t help you.

The trick with them is getting a thin/supple enough leather to make those folds.

I'm thinking you'd have to oil it and work it first, especially around the butt. Lacing helps....

What weight or thickness leather straps do you tend to use? I was going to buy some 9/10oz strap but am afraid that might be too thick

9/10 sounds right, but I honestly don’t remember the weight. 1/8” is the light end. 3/16” is nice and stout. 1/4” is probably too much.

My first attempt. I think I made the cuts too long, the loop slips too easy I think. Are the cuts supposed to be staggered or start from equal distance from the end of the strap?
