SC bill would allow turkey hunting near bait/feed in certain circumstances

(C) It is not a violation of this section if a person is at least two hundred yards from a baited area located wholly within a property that is actively managed for the restoration and sustainability of wild bobwhite quail, and that is permitted by the department for this purpose. The department must apply current best practices for managing wild bobwhite quail habitat in making a permit determination.

Have to admit, I did not completely read it to begin with. Looks like a way for the plantation guys to have their cake and eat it to.

I am one hundred percent on board with anything that can be done to protect and enhance quail numbers, but this is complete BS.

Will Primos had someone speak on his behalf for something similar in MIssissippi recently. Seems he wants to be able continue to supplement feed his deer during turkey season with no restrictions.

Looks like politics continue to overshadow biology.

You can bait turkeys on private lands in Florida and its no big deal there.

Just be 100 yards or more away from the deer feeder and its all good.

Texas allows baiting too.

Those states attract a lot of turkey hunters.

The problem in Florida isn't baiting, its lots of non resident hunters going down and hunting public and private lands, at least according to the locals down there. Wanting that Osceola turkey.

hunting turkeys around feed for bobwhite quail isn't the end of the world

Lemme get within one hundred of a feeder and I’ll show you a dent…

The problem with Florida is the fact that it’s the only place in the entire country where you can kill an Osceola…public is hammered…private is a pretty steep pay to play. Landowners want customers…customers want to see some juice for their squeeze. Constant continuous success means revenue. Baiting will get you the easy juice and easy revenue.

Texas is a different animal all on its on…its a different world.

I’d never pay some of these prices to hunt a ranch and bounce from feeder to feeder, but that’s just me.

A few years ago we had it crammed down our throats baiting was doing more harm than good for turkeys, along with 50 other theories that were quickly and widely accepted by the masses that led to reduced days afield, smaller bag limits and higher prices….but NOW…it seems as though it’s ok as long as we’re feeding a specific bird or possibly another animal that’s not the intended target, yet will utilize the bait placed for the other critters, yet you’ll do no harm as long as you’re one hundred yards from said bait…I guess one hundred yards is the magic number to where there’s no outside influence and you’re back hunting him in his natural and wild environment. I wonder if public land quail would benefit from supplemental feeding just like their private land cousins?
We might as well just put a strutter decoy under a tripod feeder and be allowed to sit in a blind at 25 yds.

Like I was told the other day. If you know where he’s going it’s not that hard.
