Red Snapper Weekend!

Red snapper are federally regulated. Not by NCDMF. Those harvest numbers are for the east coast of Florida through NC.

Did I use the wrong name for the numbskulls ? Is it USFWS ? That it's federally regulated is even more stupid than I thought.
Our federal gooberment can't do anything right with the exception of our armed forces. We have some badass troops unfortunately led by the politicians that couldn't follow a road map.

Fish stocks outside 3 miles are regulated by National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).

They have a hard job just like NCDMF. Their science and funding is extremely limited and laws force them to use the best available science. It is hard to manage millions of anglers with unlimited access.

Trust the science....where have we heard that before?

No matter where you go you can’t get away from red snapper yet they are overfished?

No where did I say trust anything. All I said is they are legally required to use the “best science”.

Just because something is best does not mean it is good.

You should not waste your talent for clarity on fish @Fatkid
You should dive into the political discussions.
Your unpopular take seems feasible to me.
Hard to hear if you want unlimited protein from the sea but informative imo.

You are 100% correct. Especially that last sentence.

I honestly try my best to stay out of these conversations but I have a hard time reading so many uninformed comments.

Informed or uninformed, some folks only get down to fish in the ocean every so many years. If all one can hardly catch on a bait is this restricted fish, or that restricted fish, it don't leave much choice on catching and eating your own.
Use tags. Give X tags for the species per year. Be better than restricting to just certain days per year. And make the fine for fudging on the tags enough to deter most from attempting.

That's the way it should be and I 100% with that.

Just like flounder.....we get 15 days. I will work a minimum of 6 of those days....cuts me to 9 possible fish. Of those 9 days the weather "may" cooperate 5 of those.....gives me 5 MAX.

That's just ME.....This is why I have such a problem with the DMF "estimated" catch saying we caught X amount of lbs over.....WHO are they asking about this?

i never get polled by gallup but apparently they do ask folks.
You can spend the rest of your life worrying about the math on surveys and it doesnt change their validity.

If the numbers were TRULY a problem, they'd limit the sales of licenses. They won't do that. Ever.
Give us each our tags and let us fill them at our leisure. When we are on OUR timetable.

I guarantee you a 2 day snappeer season would result in less fish kept and killed than a year around quota system.

And fishermen would gripe about any snapper quota permit system anyway

Current quota/catch limit

During the Limited Open Seasons:

  • The total annual catch limit is 42,510 fish.
  • The recreationalannual catch limit is 29,656 fish.
    • The recreational bag limit is one red snapper per person per day. This applies to private and charterboat/headboat vessels (the captain and crew on for-hire vessels may retain the recreational bag limit).
  • The commercialannual catch limit is 124,815 pounds whole weight (12,854 fish).
    • The commercial trip limit is 75 pounds gutted weight.
  • There are no minimum or maximum size limits for the recreational or commercial sectors.

The minute we start with tags for one fish, we get tags for all fish.

Better would be sell/require a federal snapper/grouper boat permit like is already required for tuna/marlin/spearfish

Also if a longer season is implemented expect size limits.

I have no problem with a reasonable slot. I believe catching the breeding stock is an important part of what’s harming our fisheries.

Someone disposed of some carcasses a little too close to the ramp this weekend and there was a huge snapper head floating by the dock.

In the Gulf of Mexico federal waters there is a 16 inch size limit.

How many fish under 16 inches caught are improperly released and die?

I wish I made it down more often, but I just don't. And I'm certainly not going to plan a vacation around a 1-fish per day limit of anything short of a Bluefin.

So the ridiculous flounder and snapper seasons effectively prevents me and hundreds of thousands of other fisherman from being able to harvest any at all.

The minute we start with tags for one fish, we get tags for all fish.
I don't think so. There's no need for a tag for any fish in which the season is open year round or for a significant portion of the year. Unless there is a season limit.

Take another highly harvest-restricted fish - Red drum - for example. One per day, any day of the year. There's no need for a tag. But when you cut a season down to 2 weeks or 2 days, you've eliminated the majority of access to that fishery. And before someone comes on and preaches catch and release, the biologists/DMF have asked that anglers not target them out of season due to C&R mortality. So the long time summertime tradition of flounder fishing has essentially been eliminated.

I was told to Always be sure to use a descending device and don't forget to poke the eyes , swim bladder and stomach. 🤷

When i was a kid? Some. We used vent tools, but you know some amount of those fish didn’t make it.

Descenders are required (to be on the boat) now.

We braved the east side Friday in a 22' to get ours. The bite was hot when we got there but shut down quick. We ended up with 2 decent sized snappers and a few triggers. Better than last year. Last year the weather was worse and we got no red snapper but caught a real nice grouper. We planned for going both days but we took enough of a beating in one trip. I like the tag idea.

I guess folks just need to put a grill on their boats these days. I don't know.
Don't wanna become an outlaw but, the regulatory commissions seem to want it that way for people that wanna catch a fish or two to eat. Fresh seafood is good. I like to catch my own.

I fished with a guy in Florida that said, "if we catch a gag grouper I'll dive down and filet it on the reef." He would bring his little air tank "just in case." haha
