I want to know where in NC or southern VA. Who carry real black powder. I want to try some Swiss as I was told it burns cleaner.
Living in Wilkes I always go to Duncan's. I have bought a lot of Goex from them over the years.this was 3-4 years ago, but at the time, Duncan's gun shop in Wilkesboro carried it. Worth a call. I just got a lb of Swiss a few weeks ago, but haven't used it yet. Used a lot of Goex over the years.
I called them and was told they do not carry it.Living in Wilkes I always go to Duncan's. I have bought a lot of Goex from them over the years.
In MA we couldn’t order any ammo to our doorstep and needed to have our firearms license with us to purchase ammo. I don’t recall what the regs were around black powder since it wasn’t an item on my radar when I lived there, but I imagine it was treated the same.I help our muzzle loading gun club get GOEX, Schuetzen, and Swiss from Powder, Incorporated in Clarksville, AR. www.powderinc.com . Ten of us pool an order for the three brands GOEX, Schuetzen, & Swiss in mixed grades of 2FG, 3FG, & 4FG and get a 25 pound case shipped to a secure location. You can also order a 10 pound or 5 pound case. Of course the larger the case quantity, the cheaper the price per pound, and the price you see on the website INCLUDES shipping and hazmat charges.
So, a five pound case of Swiss 3 FG costs about $48 per pound, a ten pound case costs about $39 per pound, and a twenty-five pound case costs about $33 per pound. You can mix the other brands and grades in the same case.
So, you could buy five pounds of Swiss 3 FG and five pounds of Schuetzen 3 FG to compare, and both brands combine to qualify for the ten pound price level. Prepare to buy more than you need currently, because things may not change come November.
I suspect most stores in NC that have a Federal Explosives License, (F. E. L.) will just carry one brand like Schuetzen or now, GOEX. I had a F. E. L. for forty years and the ATF is very fussy about being exact on record keeping of purchases. Fifty pounds was the limit for retail stores. I had more difficulty with the city fire marshal than with the ATF. For many stores, the profits made on black powder do not balance against dealing with the Feds and the municipal fire marshal.
Consider ourselves lucky, I was told that folks in Massachusetts cannot get black powder shipped or purchased in stores.
