1943 steel penny.
Many moons ago I came across this small plastic bag of steel pennies.
During World War II the US was trying to conserve copper for ammunition and other things so they decided to make pennies out of zinc coated steel.
1943 was the only year this was done.
The 43 penny is actually magnetic.
You can see the difference in the copper penny on top.

Here's your history lesson for the day.20260128_125211.webp

NOT THIS AGAIN!
I was out today and noticed the neighbor down the street placing signs in their yard. "A Healthcare Hero Lives Here". I asked what the deal was. He stated his wife is a nurse and is expected to be at work even with the threat of bad weather next week. So? I asked, what's the hero part? He reiterated his statement. I couldn't help but laugh, and that upset him. I explained just because she needs to do the job she was hired for doesn't make her a hero. There are more treacherous careers than nursing. Name 1 was his retort. Umm, law enforcement, the tow truck driver who responds in all kinds of weather, the linemen and women who keep the power on to name a few. Then he stated that I must have never had a job that was hard. I explained I was a retired correctional sgt and in bad weather would routinely be mandated to work the next shift. Including 4 times in my career when I spent multiple days at work because of snow. Then I ranted on how I was tired of people misusing the term "hero" to described teachers, truck drivers, garbage collectors, and athletes. When I returned home his wife had already called my wife to voice her disdain for me. My wife wasn't happy with me either but like I told her, we live at the end of a dead street so they have no reason to come our way. :p

A little history: During covid we had neighbors who were both nurses. their yard was covered in signs announcing how they are "heroes" for working during covid. I couldn't help but ask them how many patients a day they see. When I heard it was less than 12, I told them to suck it up or get another job. try dealing with 400 inmates in a single housing unit pissed because they can't go to yard or they don't like what's for chow.

I'm sold old that I remember when Bob DeBardelaben did the weather and Barbara Gibbs was voted the hottest woman on the news. Where did time go?
