Pappy Van Winkle 12 Year Bourbon

Should I drink it or sell it assuming I find someone crazy enough to spend $1000+ on it

I happened to win one of the ABC lotteries and chose a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 12 Year Bourbon.

The cost is $110 but a buddy of mine pointed out these bottles are going between $1000 - $1500 online. I'm curious what all the fuss is about and why anyone would pay that much. I'm tempted to try it; however, one big caveat is I don't have a very refined pallet as I don't have a sense of smell. For those that have tried it, is it really worth it or would I be better of selling it and getting the cheap stuff I'm used to drinking ... Lol

It’s a supply and demand thing. Small amount released. Forester does the same thing with the birthday reserve.

That's kind of what I was afraid of. I have a weird sense of taste. I can still taste the oak and a lot of the stronger flavors but a lot of the subtle flavors I don't notice.

so different circumstances and different subject but,,,,

in 2016,,, during the trying week that I lost sight in my left eye, I won a Barret M82A1 .50 cal rifle with a FINE Leopold scope, bipod, and case,,,

I took possession, but after all was said and done on my eye, I couldn't risk the potential recoil damage to my remaining eye,,,and I had shot a LOT of .50 cal sniper rifles in my past,,,

so I ended up selling it,,, because my available senses couldn't justify keeping it,,,, even though I wanted it for the ONE defensive position I can justify,,,,

sell that expensive stuff and use the money to buy something you can actually enjoy

You could trade it for a deer hunt at Biltmore, 30 mins of an arborist’s time cutting branches and raking leaves, or half of a mate’s tip on a full-day charter that comes back at lunchtime bc the captain thinks you caught enough.

I will start bidding at $120! :) I like bourbon, and have been lucky to try some cool stuff, however . . . . I have paid decent money for some "good" bourbons I did not like. With that said, if you have concerns, I would sell it. There are some very good bottles at much better price points which make you happy- stick with them! Think of it this way: Do you want to develop a taste for $110 bottles of bourbon?

I’ve tried it and it’s a good bourbon. Not secondary price good though. I’m a drink it type. Make memories not trophies with it. I have have a couple of bottles Im saving for the right time for memories

IF you need money, sell it. If not, keep it and drink it as a toast for a special occasion. Most likely, youll never get your hands on another bottle. You have nothing invested in it, you cant lose.

I’ve ran across one liquor that I thought tasted far better than the price I paid for it. I hoarded 6 bottles of it. It was a limited release from a small rum distillery in Manteo. Prior to getting Covid in Aug 21, I was pretty much a functioning alcoholic by most definitions. Nights I didn’t have my daughter, I’d come home from work and have a drink or three. After Covid, I lost my taste and appetite for it for some reason. I’d drink more in one week back then than I’ve had collectively since August of 21.

All that to say, I wish I’d held on to those bottles of rum. They were absolutely delicious. That said, I’m not sure how they’d taste to me now, and if I’d appreciate them.

I’m always looking to buy something fishing related, and upgrade stuff on my boat. I try to sell stuff I don’t need or use, to free up cash for that.

I’ve had the opportunity to have a sip or two of some “really good” bourbons. None IMO were worth the price of cost it took to make the glass bottle they came in. Sell it and get your $$ and stick to your regular drinks.

Man do yourself a favor and enjoy that bottle. What are the odds you ever get another bottle without paying full price? Drink it, enjoy it, it's very very good. There is a reason it costs so much. If it were just another Weller it wouldn't sell for what Pappy does. It has a reputation and cost for a reason. If you do decide to sell, don't tell me.

I've never tried the Pappy. But I have tried a few others and I don't think my palette is refined enough to tell that much difference. I don't think I've tried anything over $100 per 5th though. I'm happy with Eagle Rare, Elijah Craig SB, Four Roses Small Batch Select, Henry McKeena 10yr, and Buffalo Trace type.

If it will bring $1,500, I'd probably sell it and upgrade to my thermal budget. :ROFLMAO:

Big bourbon guy offered me a drink of the 12 year once. I don't have a super refined pallet but I like bourbon and was glad I got to try it. The smoothness and warming after taste was the thing that stood out to me the most.
My "everyday" bourbon was EW for years, now that I drink less I normally get Makers Mark. I keep some decent bottles around for special occasions and stuff but I'm no where near an aficionado.

To answer your question I'd rather have $1200 than the bottle, but unless you know big bourbon drinkers or are connected to some bourbon group it may be hard to sell it(not sure the legality of selling a bottle either).

But it may just be something to hold onto until a very special occasion(wedding, retirement etc) and being able to pull that bottle out would be pretty cool!

Just so you know. If the bottle was acquired in NC through the ABC system, it is illegal to resell it above the ABC controlled price. Yes, I know it happens all the time but if I were going to sell it, I would not advertise it on an open forum. I did not know this practice was illegal until I had this discussion with a local ABC board member. They recently busted a guy who sold a bottle of Pappy via an online auction.

I've had Pappy 15 and 20.....never had 12 or 23. I love bourbon, and have tried A LOT of them. Pappy is no better than many others, IMO. In fact, I've had several that to me taste much better, but that's just me. Personally, it's definitely not worth the aftermarket prices that people pay. I'd pay MSRP all day long just to have some in my cabinet. All that said, if I were in your shoes.....inexperienced palate, no sense of smell.....I'd probably sell it. If you have a friend who is a bourbon collector, let him know and if he won't buy it he will probably know someone who would. Highly doubt you'll get $1k for it....probably $500 if I had to guess.

For $1200 a man could sell and go full blown bootlegger. That would cover a couple of sheets of copper and sticks of pipe,enough to have a nice size cooker and a water jacket condenser

I’ve owned a couple bottles worth more than that on the secondary. I drank em both with good friends…and those memories are worth far more than the money!

But I’d sell that pappy, because it’s pappy. The only thing impressive about is sheer volume of people that will actually pay that for it…

Not arguing but I don't see anything online saying resell is illegal. I heard about the lottery from a board member who said I should put in just to resell it if I won. Seems like it would be no different than any other collectables.
