Old school clothing.

When I first starting elk hunting we went to the army surplus stores and picked up Swiss army wool pants and jackets. Very warm but also very heavy and bulky!! When it got wet it was very heavy.tomelk2_zps2ef8fe5c.jpg

Man I don't miss that old school stuff at all....rubber coats, canvas waders, multiple layers of long underwear and socks, heavy wool shirts that the sleeves were always too short.

New stuff is awesome! I just invested in rechargable electric socks that I can control from my phone...life is good!

This thread makes me laugh.. Old school, I FROZE, I ain't got time for that crap at my age. The new stuff is thinner, lighter and warmer for the most part. I still wear my oldish school coveralls but underneath that are the best new age layers that I can afford. On on days like we are having right now.. the heated insoles I have for my heavy boots are the cats meow...
To be fair you never wore the good old stuff. Junk is junk, don’t matter when it was made.

The beauty of ‘new’ stuff is that you can spend as much or as little as you wish and still be plenty warm.

I love finding the guys selling military returns at the flea market. Top of the line base layers at rock bottom prices. Even has the supplier on the tag.
Good stuff if you haven't got to have the yeti tag on your underwear.

Other than Sitka fanatics I am not sure any of it is real warm. Funny story, a buddy of mine from Wyoming (big time world wide hunter) came to bear hunt with me in SE NC in November. He was wrapped head to toe in Sitka abd Kuiu, swearing about how good it was. He froze his ass off and had to come out of stand early each day. I guess its fine if you are climbing mountains but he also froze at my place in Western NC over thanksgiving while deer hunting.

If one can’t stay warm in NC, then I dunno what to tell em. It ain’t hard to do. But the best gear for climbing mountains will never be the best gear for sitting a stand.

I’m wearing some now. 🙂

The stuff I wore back in the day sucked. If it was wool, it was heavy and scratchy. Nothing was waterproof. No stretch to anything. And most of it was hand-me-down from somewhere. I froze my tail off.

I remember the first time I bought my own brand new camo jacket from Cabela's when I was in high school. The exterior was saddle cloth -like suede, and it actually repelled water. I loved that jacket, and it was one of the first pieces of new hunting clothing I had.

I always liked the chamois shirts, but they’re so cheaply made anymore, I don't waste my time or $$ on them. Back in the 80/90’s I could get a half dozen years of wear out them.
Many a deer were killed back in the day when men were wearing that woolwrich plaid clothing.
I still have several of the Rattlers brand chamois shirts.

The best part of some of the new stuff are zippers along the legs up to the thigh and under arm pits. Turns the corner when you get too hot and vents the sweat off. Works very, very well. Unzip when walking and zip up when in the stand.

I've got my Grandfather's red plaid Woolrich hunting coat. It's looking tired, but I wear it when we get snow that I have to be out in. Also got a pair of red & black striped leather palm chopper mittens that belonged to my other grandfather. I keep them in the pocket of the Woolrich coat.

I have an old school woolrich woodland camo parka my girlfriend bought me in 1982 that I used duck & deer hunting. I've gotten a little thicker since then (go figure) and can't remember the last time it fit. It's hanging in a closet taking up space.
