Okay time for some advice to the macho men

Pathology report came back all clear on what they dug out Monday. No melanoma in residual areas, in situ.

I do have a three-inch incision with ten stitches showing on the back of my neck that is gonna leave a mark. Small price to pay for "nipping it in the bud".

Oh you did have full excision and not Moh’s. I mistook it you had results that day during the visit.

My spot wasn’t but a pencil eraser so thought it was overkill to have 6.5 cm scar. Made sense when they explained the need for a healthy margin and pull the skin back together so they don’t have to come back and cut again.

Same here, about the size of a pencil eraser in the middle of my forehead. They kept cutting and checking and cutting and checking until hole was the size of a quarter. Then they started stretching and stitching and then sent me home from Durham...with nothing for pain. If I hadn't found some meds left over from a dental procedure I'd have been in ER by midnight, pain was off the charts...

Yeah, I guess they took out quite a plug from the incision and stitches. Took over an hour from start to finish.

Amazing how you can walk around feeling perfectly fine and not know that something is attacking you that could kill you if not treated. It's the things that don't hurt that are dangerous.

pain was off the charts...

When the local anesthesia wore off I thought I was in pain but it turned out it was poorly placed dressing. When I moved, the tape would prevent skin to move with my muscles and it would burn. Once I figured it out I had wife redress and I would move in full range while she placed the tape.

Otherwise I was pain free minus very minor discomfort.

As someone who has had a melanoma removed please also understand that they can show up anywhere on your body. Not just areas that are exposed to the sun. This is why it is important to see a dermatologist yearly for a full body scan. I go every 8 months now and will continue from now on. I think I was 41 when they removed it. I have had quite a few other spots removed as well especially moles but thankfully they came back negative. I prefer zinc based sunscreens versus the regular stuff at Wally World as it as been said to have adverse long term affects.

I too have been cut on or burned off so many times I have lost count. Now at age 65 the 2 things I regret most about my outdoor hobbies: 1) wear sunscreen and/or cover up. 2) wear hearing protection
I hope you younger forum members will listen to advice that I heard many years ago but regrettably ignored.

After over a dozen calls to different offices and being told the wait time was 2-4 months, I was able to get in touch with a dermatologist in Knoxville and get scheduled for this Friday.
Got checked out today. Doctor had no concerns and said I had nothing to worry about. I am someone that usually puts potential health issues out of my mind and hopes it doesn’t come back to bite me. Felt good to be told by a doctor that I’m good to go as far as melanoma is concerned. Thanks for the encouragement via creating this thread

I'm 58. I went for the 1st time, last year. My doc is a +/- 25 yo little brunette - absolute smoke show.

She went all over me with some sort of scope thingy.......even looked down inside my underwear.

I wouldn't miss another one for the world.

I know this is a older thread but I have been through this the past few months. I had a Invasive Malignant Melanoma on my upper arm and 2 lymph nodes from under my arm removed a few weeks ago. It's not the surgery that gets you it's the mental aspect of waiting for the pathology report which takes about a week. I went for my follow-up last Thursday. The lymph nodes were 100% clear and all the margins taken from the cancer removal were 100% clear of any cancer cells. The section of skin down to the fatty layer removed is 8cm by 4.5cm. You don't really understand what a huge relief the this was to have 100% clear lymph nodes and margins. I also had a small squamous cell removed off my nose which will be treated at Carolina skin care.
I was told by two doctors and a surgeon that this is not something that happens right away or over night it normally starts from skin cells that were damaged in the past and are now starting to mutate. The Melanoma they removed was between 3 moles. I noticed a slight change last year in the middle of these moles. No itching no bleeding not raised or red. Just a slight change.
I have always been a outdoors person on boats tractors etc. if I would have been getting a yearly skin check every year they would have caught it earlier. Now I have to go in every 3 months for a skin checkup for a minimum of 3 years .
Morel of the story is if you are or have been in the sun a bunch get a yearly skin care check. I will tell you it takes a few months to get a appointment with a good skin care office. For the past 8 years or so I have always worn light long pants UPF 50 shirts and hats. Doesn't matter if your skin has been damaged in the past.
It does help with future issues. Be pro active.

Glad it checked out OK for you. I too spent way too much time unprotected from the sun in my earlier years. My mother always warned me that I would get skin cancer if I kept doing that. Danged if she wasn't right! The other warning I ignored big time was hearing protection. Paying the price for that too now...

I went for my annual physical last week and asked my doc about a mole on the side of my head and he referred me to a dermatologist in Kernersville. Got there for her to check out the mole and she said it was fine but was concerned about a spot on my ear so she cut some of it out for a biopsy. Playing the waiting game now on the results. I have gotten better in the last few years about wearing a wide brim hat and long sleeve shirt while fishing.
Cancer has a history in my family so im pulling out all the stops now. Got a colonoscopy last year and they removed some cancerous cells, follow up this year shows all clear.

Glad to hear the good news. Great advice.

I go every 6 months. Lifeguard, surfer, fisherman, always, always, always outdoors. I get something burned or cut off every visit. I have some great MOHs scars on my head and neck.

Wear a hat, sleeves when you can. Enjoy the outdoors, but respect your skin.

Went a few months ago for a screen, wound up donating some of my hide for pathology. Then went back for her to sandpaper a BCC off my back and had to purchase a cream which I applied to my face and neck twice daily for four days before going back to be checked for rashy spots??? Now she has me coating my forearms 4 times daily for a month prior to going back for a check. A pain, but have had tons of exposure in that old tobacco patch, the beach, and daily sunbathing in SEA so might as well go along with her to protect my old Scots-Irish-English hide.
