New 350 Legend by Winchester

Nice.
Like a few tics up from a 30 carbine.
Not sure about what the ammo would cost or if it would become a standard....
Would be cool in the AR may look into spec more and see if anyone can get a reamer...
Will be a cross between a 357 mag and max but no rim so work great in bolts or autos.

With several of the traditionally shotgun only states going to straight cases allowed we will probably see more of this kind of thing in states that still allow those black assault rifles to be used for killing deer.

I be willing to bet the bank that the only reason this round was ever developed was because of the straight walled cartridges/primitive weapons seasons many states are going with.

It sure looks like a fun round to shoot and hunt with... but... The straight walled .460 S&W is faster than this self proclaimed "fastest straight walled cartridge ever"

Prolly about the same speed. Dont see any ad copy with a velocity but at advertised 1800 fpe with a 150g bullet the math comes out to about 2325 fps. Just cant recall where i saw rhe muzzle energy figure.

Found the data in an outdoor life article. 150g. 1800 fpe at the muzzle. 2325 fps muzzle. So. Same same 30-30 in a 150g load and something less than 35 rem with a 180g bullet.

I'll stick with my 38-55. Sounds like they are just re-inventing the wheel.

My 38-55, 1850 FPS (MV) with a 280 gr GCWFP.

Has anyone shot or bought a .350 Legend yet? I've saw some carbine (18") barreled versions of rifles chambered in .350 that look interesting and feel good in the hand.

I've never been one to jump on the latest whiz bang caliber craze. While I will admit this one looks interesting, I'll stick with my Ruger Deerfield 44 mag....

If the WRC would come out of the stone age and allow some form of straight wall cartridges during MZ season they would sell like gangbusters. If nothing else limit it to single shot rifles. A lot of modern muzzleloaders have the same ballistics as many centerfire rifles.

In all reality....modern compounds can be utilized at similar ranges as muzzleloaders. I feel about as effective with one as the other.

I’m not including smokeless in my comment. I know folks have dropped deer dead with their smoke poles at 150-200 yards....but it is not common.

Ballistics similar to a 44mag.

Read a couple articles about the 350 Legend the past couple of days. I can't help but think the 150gr bullets would have a low sectional density to penetrate well.

Seems fine, I’m sure it’ll kill deer fine... but I just don’t see the point. It’s not doing anything real special that you couldn’t do with a 30-30 or 35rem for hunting. 150gr is light weight for 338cal gums let alone 35s.

Straight wall cartridges laws and being legal in a lot of the midwest states is the main reason.

Yeah I understand that, but why a 350 legend? A 44mag, 38-55, 45-70 will do just as well if not better for hunting. I don’t see the 350 taking off in an AR platform as most people get ARs for target shooting or defense. If you want a bolt gun, Ruger produces 44mag bolt action rifles and other companies could do the same if the demand was there.

^^^ The 350 legend will reach out to 200-250 yards according to the ballistic chart. The 44 mag falls off sharply after 125-150. Also they say the 350 legend kicks less than a .243. Most people don’t want to deer hunt with something that kicks like a 45-70. I think it’s a another good option for the guys in the midwest who want to gun hunt but are limited in what they can use.

The lighter bullets may be good for short range, 50 yds or less. The 150 gr .358" bullets are going to loose velocity very quick due to the lack of weight to amount of drag, for proper bullet expansion or penetration. This is one reason the 150 gr bullets are not popular with the .35 caliber rifles, ie .35 Remington. 180 gr bullets work fine and I even use them in a .356 Win and would seem to be the best in the .350 Legend, which would put it right back in the same category as reloads used in a modern rifle chambered 38-55 or .375 Win. I understand that in some states the casing has a max length which may come into play and that the .350 Legend can be used in AR platforms. On another note the .350 Legend is not reloader friendly being it headspaces off the case mouth, meaning it has to be trimmed every time. Also due to the change in rim diameter .223 brass can't be used to make .350 Legend cases. It is still a neat concept for a semiauto rifle for hunting in firearm restricted areas, just don't believe the hype used to push the bullet, I mean the cartridge. ;)

Here is the ballistics of my 38-55 load used in a "new" production Marlin CB with a 24" barrel. Load uses a 280 grain GCWFN. A BC of .2 was used in the calculations, but I'm thinking it is closer to .3, along with published data for the Win. .350 Legend.
