NEF barrel swap

I have a mid 90's NEF 20 gauge that i got when i was young. Is there any barrels i can swap out or is it always gonna be a 20 gauge. I would love to get a 223 but just seeing if there are any options.

You can use 410, 20, 16, and 12 gauge barrels. For rifle barrels you can use 357, 30/30, 44, and trapdoor level 45/70. These guns aren't like Encore's so another barrel may or may not fit as is. Sometimes you can install a shim, sometimes it takes some filing.

Chances are that the 20ga barrel was factory fitted to a SB1 (aka shotgun) frame made for low pressure barrels. Most made prior to the early to mid 2000s had large firing pins that didn't work well with the 22 Hornet with small rifle primers. 45 Colt and 45/410 could work too.
