My first Turkey (card) shoot (other than the fair).

Well, I saw the banner along the road a few weeks ago and planned to attend the Stem VFD turkey shoot held on Fridays during the month of April. I made a few trips up to the farm with a roll of brown paper, and most of my shotguns to see what patterned the best. Came to the conclusion the Browning BPS with my 20 year old extended turkey choke was the ticket and would ensure a clean sweep to top off the freezer. I arrived a half hour early and signed up for 10 rounds. I placed my gun on the table and then started looking down the line........ They brought chairs was the first thing I noticed. I also noticed nice shooting rests and extremely long barrels on mostly Remmington 870's. with custom drop in chokes, bubble levels, custom sights and multiple back up guns in the trucks. My neighbor was an older fellow (who came needing the assistance of a walker/ seat combo) looked at my shotgun and said that I was the handicapped one shooting this evening................ He shared with me a wealth of knowledge (he very much reminded me of Lee (Lasttombstone). He had only signed up for 5 shoots. Around the 4th shoot he scooted back to get his shell and promptly fell backward injuring himself. Luckily paramedics were present and he was given some pain meds and an ice pack for his neck. I waited to make sure he was ok before any jokes were made. He did chuckle and insinuate that I was trying to better my odds which in turn I Jokingly accused him of taking performance enhancing drugs. Wouldn't you know it he won that round....... I shot 10 rounds and not a single pellet was good enough to take home a prize. Not even close. I will say $50 is pretty cheap tuition in this current world.

I got an 870 super mag 26” barrel- cerakoted- turkey choke in it! Got your name all over it! I have never shot at a turkey shoot- not even the fair….. but I hear it’s addictive and some serious players involved!!

First one I ever went to a few of us went with our hunting guns. Soon as we saw everyone else’s guns we knew we didn’t have a chance. Custom guns, scopes, and longest barrels I’ve seen. We shot a couple rounds and left when we saw we didn’t have a chance against them. I’ve shot at a couple close to the house the last few years. Those only allowed stock guns other than choke tubes and one of them put a size restriction on the choke to make it fair. Won some lost some but it was fair

the last turkey shoot I went to they were checking chokes. if a 20 ga shell would not fit in the choke, they would not allow you to shoot it. I didn't think that was the best way to check them, but they used the same shell for all chokes.

My favorite local shoot restricts choke to .670. They will slide the barrel to make sure no funny business is installed in the barrel.

Last one I shot in was a NWTF fundraiser the local chapter I was a member of held. I took my 870 with a 28” barrel & turkey choke along with an Iver Johnson 32” single shot w/a full choke. I won a few rounds with the IJ.

We dispensed the shells the shooters used and only factory gun set ups were allowed. You could use your favorite turkey choke. Everyone shooting the same shells made it fair along with keeping out the custom guns. Everyone had a good time.
