FWIW, I had both 28ga (.54cal) and 20ga (.62cal) Flintlock smoothbores.....loved them both.
Took same small game with both...preferred the smaller .28ga for squirrels......20ga for Turkeys

IMO, if getting one, as you'd probably suspect, the .62cal (20ga) smoothbore would have a little more flexibility for a variety of small game types, standing/moving/flying, etc.

PS:
A nice benefit to small game hunting with an ML smoothbore is that near day's end, if you want to sit for a deer, just pull the shot load, and reload with a patched round ball...very accurate at close deer woods distances.
