Mountain Flooding

The local community and private citizens response to this has already outperformed the state and federal government aid other than what I have seen from the national guard so it had me looking at the response from FEMA after Katrina. I was trying to see how soon the mobile temporary housing was set up after that storm but never got a definitive timeline. Instead a description of the failures and waste involved filled the page. I hope this is not going to be a repeat of that tremendous malfunction of government aid that will cause more headaches and frustration but as far as the federal government it's not starting off well. Done heard FEMA was out of funds months ago

Regarding the pics from my buddy I posted earlier, him and his wife said they were SHOCKED at the amount of folks that made it back towards that little community , just to watch and take pics of damage (and others working) then leave. I asked if it was that prevalent and he said there was enough of it that there were onlookers at every little end of pavement or failed bridge
yes there are tons of onlookers...gotta have them pics and vids to post up on the book of faces, it proves you helped

Here in Alex Co we only have 1 bridge in and out of the whole county to the south. Practically everyone here works out of county. Traffic has been a nightmare. There have been 3 wrecks in the same spot on that bridge in less than 15 hours because people want pics of the debris jamb in the lake.Traffic has been snarled now for 2 days because people want to look at the lake 😞😞

My wifes cousin tried to get out of northern mitchell into Unicoi for supplies. He was stopped and told he could go out and come back but if he went over into TN again he would be denied entry back in.
They are having a terrible time with people trying to come in just to see how bad it was.
They have put a stop to the back and forth for now.

I'm just going to ask for an honest opinion. We have several truck loads of supplies ready to leave tomorrow and Thursday for the newland area. Should we wait? Should we go? Any answers will not offend me. I respect the members from that area and we want to help and not hinder. Advice please?

I would check with local emergency management that is there to see where the best drop off point is

Haver you coordinated with anyone? Local EMS or law enforcement? if not, then I would wait and do that then go. thee is already enough choas up there without someone rolling in with suplies and no prior arrangment or plan.

FEMA is around up there. At least in Mitchell county.

They were trying to have a meeting about liability issues of my friends 25 year old son who is in the military and his friend riding dirt bikes every day until 10-11 at night looking for specific people who are still missing and no contact with them has been made.

No sure if the meeting happened.

Lack of first responders in that area is an issue still. Everything is so remote they can cover very little ground. Some search and rescue people have gone missing as well.

FEMA is just like every other government agency, there is tons of red tape involved.

They do what they can. But, quite honestly they are there more for the “big picture” stuff. Local fire, EMS, LEO and SARs teams are who you want doing the actual boots on the ground stuff. The locals know the areas well. When I was in the National Guard, we always cringed when the FEMA guys would show up. They were always 2-3 days late and then they would come in and try to tell us what do (we had already been doing our own thing prior to them showing). We would just nod our heads and say “Roger that” and then go back doing whatever we knew was working best.

FEMA is setting up temporary hospitals. There is one going up on Hickory now.

Saw 25 yellow NC DOT dump trucks pulling trailers with front end loaders, dynahoes, etc rolling on I85 headed toward Charlotte today, hoping many more are following to get aid to the needed areas. 🙏

I-40 East out of Buncombe is now open, according to NCDOT.

Westbound TO Asheville is expected to open later today (if it hasn't already opened).
That is good to hear. That really suprises me looking at the erosion on the eastbound side.

It won't be the first time, one of the many reasons I am not so good at the .net stuff.
It's MY misunderstanding. No harm - no foul. My apologies.

"I" misunderstood the premise. "I" was thinking about Cooper issuing a "state of emergency".

In both scenarios (state of emergency and martial law), the "right" (one of them) that goes away I was referring to...is the 2nd amendment. I feel they would have a very hard time with that one with the folks up there.

Hey Scott, I think they are coordinating drop offs at the top of 181 there at the store on top of Jonas Ridge. I know people from Morganton were running hundreds of pounds of ice and water up there to the top. I believe they're coordinating right there at that store.

you can get to the top of 181 but there are some spots where it is down to one lane you just gotta be careful driving up

Nope. Not life threatening RIGHT NOW. But, next Thursday they’ll be 9 more days into whatever food they have.

If I have to wait a few more days OR they get word stores there are stocked…..that’s great. I will delay or not go at all.

There’s nothing in my DNA that wants to jam up anyone or see the damage up there.
I know you think you can help out your friends but use the organizations that has been set up. There are a lot of organizations that are set up already NC Baptist men’s mission. Samaritan purse. Get the info to them and let them go in and search or resupply your friends most likely it will get there quicker than you.
I know you are think only your vehicle will not be in the way but so are 100 more people.
Do not ever ever cuss at me again
