I've now got the last gun dad owns and it's an odd duck I can find nothing online about. The s/n dates it to 1997 I believe. The odd part... it's an 18" Accu-Choke barrel with a screw in fiber optic bead and no vent rib. The barrel is stamped Accu-Choke so I know it's a factory barrel. Any info would be appreciated.

what info you looking for? The a in 500A designated 12 gauge in later years - each gauge was a different letter. Then they had variations on barrel length, type, etc but normally didn't change the model letters (there are some exceptions)

I had a 500A that was camo, sold it

I can find no reference to the barrel as ever being made so curious if it’s rare, etc…
Going to change the brick hard pad out to a limb saver.

Is the barrel slighty heavier than a normal 500 18.5" barrel? I recall having a 12ga 500 factory painted the Mossberg generic woodland camo that had a barrel like you describe. I don't recall if it was a 20" or 18.5" barrel but it was a smooth barrel with a hi-viz sight and had screw in chokes. The barrel was slightly heavier built than a standard 500 of the time. That would have been in the early 1990's.

I have a Mossberg 500A with a 24 inch ported barrel and it's factory painted in ghetto camo. It's also a 1997 model.

I'm considering adding a Carlson rifled choke tube and some type of optic for a cheap slug gun. Now I need to decide if the ported barrel will shoot slugs or shave lead. No two websites agree.

Just find a fully rifled barrel and swap it in place when you want to shoot slugs. And being that Mossberg makes ported slug barrels I wouldn't worry about shaving lead or plastic from shooting slugs.

Found a 28" barrel stashed way back in a closet. The 18.5" barrel is definitely thicker than the 28" barrel.
Found out A = 12 ga, B = 16 ga, etc..
