You did reply, but you never posted your pics you spoke of. I’m still waiting.

Here are a few.
These are the ones I rotate in my pipe bag.
Have some cool other ones but they are packed up. 20201103_141228.jpg20201103_141251.jpg20201103_141305.jpg

Few pipe tampers made for BP cleaning rods and 69, 58 and 50cal patch jags.20201103_143818.jpg

Bonus picture of the BB cannon tamper. Yes it will shoot!

Those look to be some good size pipes. Next one I make, I think I’m gonna try to make a larger freehand one.

Beautiful work.

I've got some cherry I dropped last year. Might give it a shot.

That last one is a store bought one. Peterson Irish Army #86. I did bend the stem on it a little. It had a straight stem, and I heated it up and gave it a little tweak.

I've been messing with this over the past few days. I reckon it's more of a novelty than one for regular use. It'll smoke though. The bowl actually extends into what looks like the base. It was a fun little project.

How did you get the smoke hole to the fire hole?

After I cut the limb on the bandsaw, I used a 5 inch long 1/8 bit in what would become the stem, and used a 3/8 bit in what would become the bowl.

When the 1/8 bit was exposed in the bowl, I used a depth gauge to transfer its location to the outside, that's when I realized it was in what would become the faux base.

Edit* I didn't do any "decorative" work until I knew there was a path.

This thread put a worm in my brain. Made this pocket pipe this evening. It's about 3-3/4" long.

For future pipes @Mr.Gadget , what site would you recommend purchasing stems from?

I can not answer that. Was getting all my work done and parts from a local pipe shop.
They closed. Last time I needed anything I went to a pipe shop in Winchester Va.
Great shop and good people. He even sets up a booth at our Civil war shoota and he had what I needed. Will see if they still carry stuff like that and get back to you.

NCbowjunkie sent me a couple pieces of briar and oak burl. Guess I have my work cut out for me.

First I made a pathway for the bowl and stem with a small bit. Then I stepped the bowl up one bit size at a time till I got to a half inch.
Next I took an old 3/4” paddle but that had hit a few screws and was a little mangled and dull and hit it with a grinder to take the points off and round the bit.
The paddle wobbled around and made a triangular hole, so I used the sanding wheel on a dremel tool to clean it up.

Went about as far as I will until I get a stem. I’ll probably flare the top of the bowl a little more by taking a little more meat out of the bottom and middle. For the wood part of the stem, I’m gonna try going from round to square right before the stem changes to plastic.

Check out the last photo real good. When I was sizing the stem, I broke the stem. Had to chop it again.
