Any one else ever make one? I got a wild hair today and made one out of a piece of hickory out of the wood shed.

With morning coffee. A little olive oil and a polish with leather to smooth it a little.

man that looks good! I tried one several years back out of corn cob...wasn't that pretty and didn't smoke worth a CRAP, so I trashed it! But that one is sweet...and love the axe too!

Just wondering how you carved it out, wood lathe or by hand? Not trying to steal your secrets of woodworking just curious...

Split a chunk out of the log with an axe. Cut it to about 4" with a saw so I had a 2x4x3 block. I drilled the hole for the bowl then started to round it with the axe. Rough cut the rest of the bowl and stem on a band saw to within about 1/4-1/8" of where I wanted it. Rasp, Dremel, and sandpaper. Dremel tool was key.

Thanks for the info. I have a Dremel tool, rasps and everything but a band saw but I have access to one..I have some Hickory in my shop might give a pipe a shot later just to have something to mess with, I used to smoke a pipe long years ago but I quit with tobacco in 1973..

If you want to start on the easy side you can get a pipe blank.
it will come with the wood, and stem all ready fitted and the bowl undersized.

In a way you could smoke it as is, your work is in shaping the bowl a the pipe then bending and fitting the stem to what you want.

Great for a first timer.

Need to get some pictures of some pipe tools I have.

Being into blackpowder I made some with a 2" section of cleaning rod with a 69 cal cleaning jag on one end and fluted thread protector on the other side.

Gave all my horn tampers away.
Would glue a silver dime on the end of the horn to protect from heat, also used plumbing brass caps to cap the end.
