Funny I have hunted that tract bunch of times and I dont ever remember seeing a snake down there. Granted I have only hunted it a handful of times outside of November, but even on the few bow hunts i did down there i dont think we saw a snake. That being said, that tract will depend alot on how high the water is when your hunt is. Lots of area, and the deer are spread out over most of that tract. Feds do not take care of the tract like they used to. None of the roads have been cut in many many years. lots of good spots, but you gotta walk to find them. your land navigation skills better be pretty good as well, cause that swamp all looks the same. good compass and GPS are a must have. I have several spots that are awesome on that tract but they are over a mile from the road and the river. Not an easy hunt if you kill one, but there are some good deer to be had if you are willing to work for them before and after you shoot one. I have had several years where you could not hunt becasue the river was flooding and that whole tract was underwater. It is a very unique tract and I enjoy my hunts down there.

No turkeys there for sure. One time, turkey hunting I had a bird pined down the evening before. The next morning I got up and slipped in the swamp with the moon light and sat down. The light broke and the birds started banging their heads off. The biggest, fattest water moccasin ever laid there about 10’ in front of me. Never again will I go in the woods down there without a good light. Screw spooking game. 😅

Does anyone know at what river level the lower Roanoke gamelands is too flooded to be hunted? Or in other words, what is the highest river level you are willing to hunt it.

Just found this a minute ago. this should help figure it out.

Check the activate gauge and it will let you adjust the flood stage and show inundation and depth. Looks like the swamps may have water in them, but any ridges should be ok.

I wish the Feds had adequate staff to take care of it. Last I heard there was the Refuge Manager, a biologist (a position several refuges in NC no longer have believe it or not) and an admin person.

Depends on the tract. I have hunted Broadneck around 15 feet @ Hamilton. Most of it was under water. Couple islands on Beach House. Sure most swamps with river only access were the same.
