Have any of you used an inversion table for low back pain? If so, did it help?

My brother in law swears by those tables. Have you tried a chiropractor? I used to think they were kin to witch doctors but mine has helped me.

I have an appointment for Monday morning. I hope he can help, I need some relief.

I have been going to the chiropractor for years. Driving a forklift for the last 18 years and having to drive it in reverse with my back twisted has done a lot of bad things to my back. Nothing serious but my chiro 100% helps. Can't go wrong with a good chiro its just finding an honest one. Mine does all of ECU sports and doesn't keep you coming back if you don't need to.

Hope he helps you get it straightened out.

Go to a physical therapist, not a chiropractor. I injured my back during a National Guard training exercise. 9mm bulge between L4-L5. Went to a chiropractor first, only got temporary relief, all symptoms would return within 2-3 days. I then spent 6 weeks doing PT 3 days a week. Fixed me. No issues since.

I used One off and on for about a year now it helped me a lot with a bulging disc. I however completely ruined my back on the morning of October 22 putting on my socks for work of all things. As I had my leg up on the bed I had the worst pain I could ever imagine shoot from my back to my toes on my left leg. I knew I hurt myself bad but told myself get up go walk it off. I made it half way to work and pulled over to puke my guts out for 5 mins til I could get back in and go home. Wife got me an appointment to back specialist in Cary that day. He scheduled an MRI for opening day of black powder of all days but I’m hurting bad and my leg is numb from the knee down. Outcome was a massive rupture of L4 disc I had surgery last Monday and actually get my staples out tomorrow morning. Don’t play around with your back. I tried the get me by route and although that isn’t “THE REASON” mine turned out like this I feel like it contributed. Good luck

Id only do surgery as a last resort or as in your case necessity. Too many people I know with worse off backs after cut happy surgeon's wanted to get there hands in there

I agree with that what I meant mainly was the try this try that methods. I’ve dealt with back trouble for several years off and on and most orthopedics do everything they can to prevent surgery. My orthopedic wouldn’t do my surgery he had me see a neurosurgeon.

I have to disagree on the not having surgery. Without surgery to replace disc and put in the “cage “ I doubt I would be walking or alive. Had it done in 2010 and I can do anything I want to. Go to Carolina Nuerological in Greensboro and let them check you out.

Gary Holt of Slayer has a chronic bad back from years of working construction and head banging with his original band Exodus and he swears by his inversion table. He even takes it on the road. So does Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse.

One of my lifelong buddies had back surgery two years ago. He's a big dude, a cop and former college football and arena league player. He woke up from the surgery with a big gash on his chin. The dummies dropped him on his face. LOL. We always teased him about his big chin.

My wife was about to have back surgery (recommended by a neurosurgeon) until someone recommended a certain chiropractor. He is great. Saved her from surgery and now she has very little pain and goes for a monthly "adjustment". I was skeptical until I actually went and found my back pain was coming from my hips being out of line. He adjusted and back pain gone!!!

The most important thing about back trouble is to find out exactly what is causing it. Devices like a table, chiropractors and physical therapy can help with certain specific problems. However all that can make things worse in more serious situations, like spinal stenosis or fractures. And if you have a ruptured disc you will have surgery. I have an extra vertebrae in my lower back which causes curvature of the spine and I had a ruptured disc about four years ago. The worst pain I have ever experienced bar none. I couldn’t walk without a crutches so I had the surgery right away. That pain was gone when I woke up and I was back to my original permanent pain level, which seemed to be less important after that. My advice is to see a neurosurgeon who specializes in spinal problems. They are usually so booked that they don’t need to push you to surgery, and they are also usually pretty well off financially so they have no incentive to operate if it isn’t necessary. I hope you do find relief regardless of what it takes. Back pain is no joke as you already know. Good luck.

Driving a 18 wheeler for forty years will work on your back. I've used a Chiropractor for years about twice or three times a year for regular adjustments. I use the inversion table a couple of days a week to keep things stretched out. Start slow on the table with short amounts of time and slight inclines, increase time and incline as you get used to it.

There are different types.
My wife, PT for 30+ years does not like the ones that flip or load you with full body weight.
What they have used is more of a traction set up the table can be flat and it uses cables or ropes to add pull and reduce pressure. They also have tables that slope and hold feet in place to work about the same.
The way my back doctor said if I do the hanging it could do more damage than good.
All you want is a gentle pull and stretch.
Just my 2 cents.

This^ is my advice as well. I was in BAD shape in April. Couldn't really move. A few months of PT and I'm much better. Depending on what's wrong with your back of course. You'll probably find you have all kinds of muscle issues, tightness, core, etc. that are contributing. I'd do PT over a back cracker any day of the week.

As much as I hate to admit this I also went to a massage place. Not a normal spa type but a medical one. When I got there I could barely get out of the truck, was able to at least move when I got out of there. All will depend on the underlying problem. Mine was caused by an injury on top of my degenerative discs.

I go to a massage therapist. She is not the feel good type masseuse, she specializes in deep tissue massage and when I first went to her it hurt like hell. She feels that my problem is not muscular, but an alignment issue.

Try a PT, one that does manual therapy.
Look for one that has been around. Those that don't have the time in just take a lot longer to find a way to help you.

Remember a Massage Therapist does not have the training or school that a PT has.

Wish you luck.

I would myself try and figure out the cause she may be right it could be alignment but if not you could lose lot time and money only to find down road wasn't. Lower back pain is more than aggravating when it hurts messes up whole body hard to get relief

I agree with the pt ,but sometimes in some peoples case surgery is the only option, believe me it is from experience ,pt gives you relief for short periods of time only to come back with a vengence, fell your pain brother.

I didn't read all responses but the inversion table does help me. I've had trouble for years with my back. I can pick up just about anything up to 150lbs and I'm fine. What hurts me is the bending over say like changing a tire with a 4 way. It takes me a week to get over that. All I have to do is step the wrong way by 2 degrees and that sciatic nerve will just about take my breath away. Back to the table now. Wife bought one of the cheaper ones for me last Christmas just to see how it worked. It does help me as I haven't had that to pinch in months. I'm in the 6'4" range so check the height limits on whatever kind you get. My head is an inch off floor if I go completely vertical.

I've had an inversion table since 1980. It has kept me vertical. Instead of just hanging upside down, I swing back and forth. That alternately stretches and relaxes my back. That's what works for me.

I had issues so bad I couldn’t tie my shoes. When back flared I’d collapse on the spot and couldn’t move from pain at all for 3-4 days. Had 4-6 attacks over a few years. PT, Inversion, etc. didn’t help so I was going to Carolina Ortho or something like that. They are in Duke plaza on Wake Forest Rd in Raleigh north of 440. They did spinal injections using a floppy long needle and ultrasound or similar. It took a few tries to find the best place to inject but afterward it gave me life back and no Pain Management crap. I hit my limit with injections though.

Then I was hit by the car. In PT towards end my back acted up. This PT knew what she was doing much better than the Sports PTs even. I also lost about 45#s mostly muscle but some fat. 4 years now and can do anything I want. I do notice I get old man sore if I gain a little weight and try stupid things so I just monitor weight and stay active as much as possible with desk job.

I would get an MRI to see what’s causing it. If your in immediate attack like pain I found the 5 day steroid pack and muscle relaxer at bed will have you fully mobile in a few days. I used that method as a crutch to get me by for years. The worst is people who haven’t had the issue commenting on your back ache like it’s a sore muscle. They have never felt the pain of having your entire support structure lock uptight an spasm. Have your wife feel the bad side and I’m betting it’s hard as a rock and she can feel spasms. It’s your backs way of protecting the bad disc. The bulge hits the nerve end and your back locks up to protect it. It’s very possible mine was just twisted away slightly after accident and more pain is in store later if it reverts back.

Back nerve pain sucks. The only thing that has worked for me is steroids. They will reduce the inflammation within 1-2 days. Muscle relaxers have never helped. It will bring you to your knees and put you out of commission in a hurry though. The worst part to me is it’s unpredictable nature. I got carried by some firemen once because of it.

Just had RFA on my bulging discs at L3, L4, L5, and S1. Its the only thing that has helped me after shots, injections, PT, chiropractors, etc... RFA has taken away all my pain!

Radio frequency ablation. Needle into nerve cluster then burn nerves so no pain sensations felt for up to one year or longer for some. Same type of procedure for the injections just adds heat to kill nerves then they grow back.
