It's hatch time...

These are wild birds they ain't drowning hen has enough instinct to get them on high ground. And the weather has been warm piedmont on east no issue with hypothermia. I can't see in any way a week of rain gonna ruin a hatch at this point

3 hens in the backyard this morning eating corn, 2 had very tiny poults with both having 5 each as far as we could tell . We typically have turkeys almost every day feeding in the back yard but we haven't seen any babies until this morning. I hope they can survive the onslaught of raptors that come to feed on the birds around our bird feeders.
2 Hens combined their brood last year, started with 9 chicks and ended up with 7 grown birds by the end of the season, that's a darn good percentage.

2 hens in the backyard at daylight this morning who finally brought their brood, at least 10 poults that we counted in this bunch. Along with the others that have come this is a very exciting year for poults. I hope the many airborne predators as well as the local foxes, feral cats and coyotes leave a few for seed.

Best hatch I've ever seen in the mountains. Saw at least 60 poults today. It looks like every egg in every nest successfully hatched and they all made it so far. They're all are pretty good sized now. I wish we could get 2-3 more years back-to-back and I'd stop crying the blues.

Saw 4 hens in a cut wheat field yesterday. Three of them had poults about 8 inches tall 13 of them. The fourth hen had a clutch too but they were only 3 inches tall and i couldnt count them they stayed right under her and about 100 yds away but id say at least 5 of them. Last week about 2 miles from where i saw these there were 2 hens with 11 poults. So hatch seems to be jamming in Harnett

About a month ago I saw a hen with 4 small chicks. Since then I have seen 2 hens here, neither with any poults and the same tom that was here all year. Guess it is the same 3 birds I saw all spring.

Hen with 4 good sized poults in Rowan county this morning.

They were literally feeding on edge of road in fresh cut grass. Turned around and went back for pics and they were still in same spot (likely to get ran over)

Thankfully they72E5F65F-04D1-4CEC-A729-2F6E7A9FB05B.jpeg ran into pasture when I stopped for pics

Yesterday I saw more Poults than I've seen in the last 7 years in Vale, on our property. In year's past, they often come into our orchard, and our woods behind our house - most seen till yesterday was 28-30 in 2014 - but today was pretty impressive, almost orgasmic. 4 to 5 Hens with nearly 8 to 10 Poults each (34 -38?) ventured up into our side yard only 40' from the house. They've never come so close before. Their procession extended from behind our house all the way up our driveway, then went into our wooded property behind our house. We chose not to hunt this past spring and I think it's paying off. Lol. I was afraid to go outside for fear of spooking them.
