Scouted Friday eve with nephew and he had 5 ticks on him… me 0 with a leafy suit soaked in permethrin.

Saturday a buddy and I scouted some in VA and I had on turkey hunting clothes that had been sprayed prior to season but I guess washed off. I found 4 ticks … 3 were attached for about 8 hrs.

this one concerns me… might be calling the doc. Don’t want Luke’s disease

thoughts??

Ps excuse my white fat belly

just looks irritated to me which is worth what you paid for it. Pull it, save the tick and watch the spot.

I've had more on me this year than I've ever had, watching one spot now that developed a rash around it after a lonestar tick was attached for a very short time.
I spray down with Repel tick defense when I remember before walking the dogs daily, but there are times I miss and come home with chiggers and ticks from my walks.
Not sure why the bloodsuckers are so bad this year, I guess it's just the time for all things democrat :-(

I pulled a common dog tick off a week and a half ago. Must have got him walking back across my wheat field. It ended up looking pretty bad and started swelling, in less than a week my ear was swollen (bite was at hat-band) and hurt like crazy to touch. ‘Lil Commie gave me some kind of infection. He was seized for only a couple of hours.

Doc put me on antibiotics and things turned around within a day or so. Never had this problem with ticks before (although I did get Lyme disease from a deer tick). That stuff is no joke!

What I was told was to call a doc if you get sick within 2 weeks of any tick bite. They carry some bad stuff now! Hope you feel better quick!

Your not kidding about em being bad. I purple painted most of my property line on Saturday. Clothes soaked in permethrin the night before. Pant leg came untucked from my boot at some point. Pulled 3 off my shins when I got home and the red bugs chewed my calves up. Hate both ticks and chiggers! Spent half of last night up itching.

Always remember to spray the permethrin on the insides of your pants cuffs too, or soak the cuffs from the outside enough for it to soak through to the inside. For extra protection, wear snake boots and tuck your pants legs in them.

I scouted public land last week and walked several miles. Between the time I left the truck and later that evening at home I got 16 (yes thats not a typo) ticks off me. Most were deer ticks and some were dog ticks. One dug in at my belt line and was attached pretty tight when I got home and found the little joker. Seems to be no redness or swelling in the area, so maybe I'm good.

If people would ditch the aerosols and mix it up in a 1-gallon sprayer, they can thoroughly soak pants, shirt, and socks. I do spray some up in the bottom of the cuffs while they are hanging on the line. Set boots out and spray the outsides of those also, and protection against ticks and chiggers is about 99.9%. My opinion is when an aerosol is used, there isn't enough volume to soak everything completely. 6 weeks is about as long as it lasts, so preseason turkey clothes are going to need another application

There are two concerns with bites, 1) localized infection and 2) systemic tick-borne illness. What I see in the pics above looks to be infection at the site, but I would be keeping a close eye on it and any other symptoms that develop in the next couple of weeks, as Hazmt said.

Video doc appointment led to 200mg of doxycycline… to prevent Lymes. Says it’s got the tell tale signs but good thing I caught it early.

however the treatment prescribed is controversial so I have an appointment with primary in person this eve.

I’m being treated for Lyme’s and my Dr is a specialist in Lyme and treatment (she had it herself), her suggestion is ANY time you pull a stuck tick off is to go on Doxy for a cycle. It’s a bacteria and can be killed. I think you are doing right thing, Lyme sucks bad!!!

Thanks… I believe the controversy from what I read is doing a 1 time dose like I was prescribed

verus a 4.4mg dose for a few weeks

I'm going to start up the trail cam campaign here in cabarrus this week so I will see how bad they are here. Years past I will be covered with them when I go into the pines more so than the hardwoods

that’s interesting. Be interested to hear what your primary doc says. I’m still waiting on my test results and my doc’s take on it was put me on doxy twice a day for two weeks either way. Continue on it longer if test comes back positive. But he also said due to the nature of testing being finicky sometimes, he’d rather err on the side of caution and keep me
On it. I still feel like dog chit but last week I felt like hammered dog chit so I guess it’s a step up

I've had rocky mountian spotted tick fever and hate ticks too. But not as bad as red bugs. Picked a lot of ticks off me but never even seen one of the thousands of red bugs I've had.

I mix my own permethrin spray. I get the 37% concentrated stuff from various pest control websites. There's a thread on the "Best of" forum that goes into detail.

I do the same thing and I soak my clothes good, especially on the cuffs, collar and around the waist so it is not just on the outside. I also put elastic draw strings in the cuffs of all of my hunting pants so I can cinch them tight around my boots and that reduces the chances of them getting to my skin. I have watched ticks crawl a few inches on my pant legs, then look like a drunk stumbling around before they fall off and die. That treatment takes care of the chiggers too.

I rotate several pairs of pants and shirts so none of the get washed enough times in a typical year to render the treatment ineffective and I only do the treatment once a year before turkey season.

I do not always wear my hunting clothes in cold weather trapping and I am more likely to pick up a tick off a coyote in Jan or Feb than any other time. A coyote is a walking oasis for ticks in cold weather and when the coyotes body temp starts to drop, the ticks go to crawling. They are so bad on some that I put the coyote in a garbage bag and spray insecticide in the bag, close it up and let it set for a few hours before I skin them.

I do the same. I don’t remember the mix ratio....but I know it’s tiny and potent. I’ve never seen ticks be able to stand it. You can spray it on a hound dog with ticks and watch them start falling off.

Skyhawk is right! I followed QDB's lead several years ago and started loading up a garden sprayer and laying out all my outdoor clothes, hats, jackets vests, etc in the yard and soaking them down good, front and back with permethrin. No ticks in several years. I mix my own. I've got the amounts written on a dedicated 1 gallon garden sprayer.

Primary doc prescribed 10 days of Doxycycline at 200 mg per day…. Whereas the video doc did 1 day of it

Prior to this weekend , I had turkey hunted 30 days in 6 states with no ticks found while wearing my Camo treated with Sawyers Permethrin.

guess it finally had worn off from washing as I had some of the same clothes on this weekend.

ps When I use Sawyers… I soak my clothes like recommended above with DIY mixes
