Hank Cherry’s take on forward facing sonar

I’m not a big electronics guy, I’ve got my front and back depth finders with GPS and side imaging.
The new stuff, is an expensive addition and one that I don’t see myself getting into in this stage of my life.
To me my next upgrade would be a trolling motor with a spot lock option to it.
Hank pretty much tells it like it is from the perspective of someone who has adapted to it as a way to stay competitive, but he believes in limiting its ability. Which I whole heartedly agree with.

hank sounds likes he's whining. "It hurts your feelings" - Personally I think every tourney guy trying to pimp their own clothing line is ridiculous.
IF you want some serious FFS hate check out randy Blaukut's rants. he does one most every day.

I’ve seen some of Randy’s rants….. He’s at a whole other level compared to Hank. I didn’t take it as Hank whining so much as he sees the advantages and disadvantages of the FFS. And the disadvantages are you can take an average bass fisherman and elevate him to superstar status by the use of electronics. Where as if he lost those electronics he’d be at the back of the field.
We saw that on Lake St Clair last fall. You would see them following one fish around casting at it multiple times until they caught it or it disappeared.

They need to really level the playing field go back to cane poles and pork rind frogs skittered thru the lily pads,,,

well that's a big assumption ( the reason for their success) but a logical one from one who is getting beat regularly by 18 yr olds.
Cherry made his coin when he was able to out muscle the field with a jerkbait- a physical advantage he had. Now the worm has turned to video gamers versus physicality. Karma? 🤷‍♂️

I do wish That Blaukut and Cherry and others would just admit why they dislike FFS so much. It's a new game -one that has them relearning the sport.
Just be honest about it.
Hell folks used to shoot a basketball with two hands without jumping. :) You gonna roll or become a contented dinosaur. The alternatives (complaining) are wasted energy.

I think (at least that was my takeaway) Cherry alludes to that in his video. Adapt or you’re done.

well he also wants their useage restricted. Just one unit, etc.
He also needs to watch out. His electronic sponsor is well known for ditching nay sayers. JUst sayin. :)

I agree 100% he’s walking a thin line. But I think he did his due diligence propping up his sponsor as well.

Cherry is getting old and tired. Like a lot of us. I remember when he used to come in Rob and Dons and have to have the latest and greatest we had to win $300 on a money nighter.

I’ve got two on my boat. Only using one currently most of the time. That said, we all have the same advantage and disadvantages yet the same few folks are still whooping everybody for the most part. You adapt and overcome just like any technology…. Or you get left in the dust.

I’ve seen the trend this year with the bass guys is to use them in the rear as side scan. Im not against that but I’ve got to where I can read imaging pretty well. Moving at 5mph, I can pause the screen, zoom in and drop a waypoint. I can’t do that with live imaging as side scan on the back.

when (and I mean WHEN) I ever get the time (and greenbacks) to buy one, I'm gonna budget in a bunch of sessions with you to learn how to use it!!

I say that as the one time I have fished with a fellow that had one, it was more fun than I deserved and I KNOW my grandkids would love it

Limit to one unit in tournament fishing only.
that ship sailed about 5 years ago. They are up to several units and 22" screens these days.
the only stopping point would be IF their streaming or TV shows became so unwatchable because of the tedious nature of scoping. it's all about coin for the tournament organizers and the fishermen and sponsors. nobody watches nobody earns.
bait companies may start hurting. It takes a handful of plastics to fish a week with FFS. No fancy xz276 aurora flash colored plug needed. :)
hank better be getting in gear. The first several national tournies so far from texas to Florida have been won scoping NOT hoping.

All I was saying is that he said limit to one in tournaments. He wasn’t pushing for restrictions on the public fishermen.

They need to g back to just depth finders. That will tell you you who the real fishermen are. That way they have to fiqure on their own where the fish are .

shooting fish in a barrel now. why I like river fishing. no depthfinders just your mind and the fish.

why I like hunting fox squirrels on foot. got to find them on your own w/o a dog.

Here's what Hank has to beat:
Notice the number of fish caught in three days (160) and the five fish limit size. It's hard do that old schooling around this early even in Texas.

I mostly use mine crappie fishing. I only get 1 day a week to fish so it really helps me get on the fish quicker. I can usually catch enough for us to eat then I got to the bank and do my bass fishing. I do find it very helpful in finding isolated stumps/brush that I occasionally catch fish on. It does help around docks to find the ones with more "life" around them. I am not good enough to spot fish and cast to them like the pros. I think given time it will level out like everything else in bass fishing. Expensive, yes. Worth it to me, yes. It just makes me more efficient. I have not fished a tournament since I was a guest in one of my dads club tournaments in the early 90's. So I am not a tournament guy. But I do wish one of the major organizations would start something like a senior league. I might be interested in something like that. But no way I think I can keep up, technology wise or physically, with todays 18 to 30 year old's.

I’ve seen some senior tournament schedules around. Usually they will be held during the week and run for around 6 hours.
I’ve fished tournaments since the mid 80’s with varying success. I still will travel up north to fish a couple a year with some long time friends. But anymore it’s just reconnecting and telling stories from all those years of doing it.

I hear the argument about “unable to catch fish without $XXK worth of electronics on the boat…”

But who is genuinely a contender at the top level of their field, that didn’t get there without FFS, etc?

I’m not up on the bass world, but as far as I know, most of the tops names I do know, were doing it without FFS…

The crappie world? It shook it up probably the most, but again, the top contenders are still able to catch fish without FFS.

Where is the line drawn? What makes that line THE line?

If someone is unable to catch fish without 20K worth of electronics on a boat they need to take up Golf, Putt-Putt that is......
If someone is unable to shoot deer without: bait, scope on a muzzleloader, high powered rifle etc...........
If someone is unable to kill ducks without: an impoundment, 100 decoys, spinners, pulsators etc........
If someone is unable to kill a turkey without: TSS, decoys, motorized decoys etc.............
And the list goes on and on.

I’d hate to think I do anything but knap me out a guilford axe to fell a tree, to make a dugout canoe and catch fish any other way other than making a weir and a few vine/white oak baskets

Yep. We're all so worried about how other people hunt and fish!
