Idk, I remember one who tried that a few years ago. I had found him via his website (which looked pretty good) but most suckers came from Facebook. Can’t remember the business name he went by but after the season a few threads popped up in these groups talking about how terrible he was. The day I went with him we were lucky to shoot some ducks, but we were on a gameland right beside the ramp, and he was 45min late. A couple days later his Facebook pages and website had all been deleted and you couldn’t find him.
Was that the guy that was a cop in little washington? A few years ago he was running ads saying he would take folks out layout boat hunting for $250/pair. I booked two hunts with him and took my youngest son with me. First hunt was in the sound out of Oriental and we shot a few birds so I thought maybe this dude is legit. Second hunt was about a month later, we had already arrived in Oriental and he calls me about 10:30 that evening saying that there werent any birds there and we were hunting in Washington. My BS flag was starting to raise since I had friends that were hammering birds in/around Oriental. Next morning we meet him in washington and he proceeds to take us on a woodie shoot and tried to have us standing in water. I'm not opposed to standing in water by any means, but when the water is deeper than my son is tall theres a problem. I politely asked the guy to take us back to the ramp since there was no way both my son and I could hunt. Guide got a little pissy till I reminded him that we had booked and agreed to a layout hunt, which he didnt deliver. Seems like I remember a few days later he deleted anything referencing him off of social media, I think he was using the same name as another guide service. I chalked that one up as a lesson learned.

That’s a crazy story too, but no I don’t think this was the same guy. This dude lived in Grantsboro or Bayboro and I don’t remember him offering any layout hunts. Every story I’d heard about him had left from Hobucken/Lowland

I may have told this one on here before but Several years ago I was hunting on a little island at the coast. Got set up an hour or so before sunrise. I pulled my boat up next to shore and was eating my breakfast. I was about to pull the blind up when I noticed one of my decoys lines looked out of place. It wasn’t terrible but enough of a hindrance that I pushed boat off and drove out to go fix it. About 30 seconds after I pushed off the bank to the side of the spread I looked up and there was a boat light that appeared to be coming right at me fast and very close. I immediately gasped and thought I was about to get hit. This 18 foot aluminum boat comes flying through my spread and smashes into the island right exactly where my boat was just parked and goes airborne up in the grass. I proceeded to fix my decoy line and then idled back up to the bank. I got out and walked over and there are 4 guys standing around an overturned boat sitting on dry land. I overheard one of them say “this is a heck of a way to start a guide trip” as I was walking up. I asked if everyone was okay and they were just all shook up, no one hurt. I had a long rope and told them to hook it up to one side of the boat and I used my boat to turn it right side up and pulled it back in the water. I told them they were fortunate and that they did that to the right guy because I could’ve very well been mad as fire and just left them in the predicament they were in for almost hurting me really bad. They were grateful and idled away on their adventure. I asked how they managed to pull such a stunt with that big screen gps they had at the steering wheel and The “guide” said “man I ran this same exact line yesterday morning” and I replied with “so you’ve already jumped this island once this week already?” They laughed and went on. We managed to meet again back at the ramp and when I saw them I said “guys this is such a coincidence……I saw 4 guys that look just like yall with the exact same model boat smash into an island this morning at zero dark 30” lol I’ll never forget that. I wish I could remember the guides name.

Similar experience as above, Guide incompetency. Was hunting the White River in AR and got flagged down by 2 guys standing on the bank. I go over to see what the problem may be and they have been left there by their Guide while he went "somewhere" to see if there were any ducks. They said they had been there for almost 2 hours and he hadn't returned. Said he went up river and that was the way I was headed so I told them I'd keep an eye out for him. I found him about 3 miles up the river stuck on a sandbar, and I mean STUCK. The closest water to his boat was at least 25 yards away so he must have been hauling butt and didn't know the sandbar was there.
I was in my smaller boat and no way it would pull him off so I waved and went up to my intended spot and hunted. Had a fair morning and when I came back down that way everyone was gone so I guess he somehow got pulled off the bar and picked up his clients. Never saw them again so I don't know the backstory.....

I used to enjoy the hunting pages on FB - good interactions, lot of smack talking, now it's just advertisement after advertisement of guides showing pictures from 10 years ago. "Come hunt the epic Pamlico" - "Got room for 12 guns tomorrow, last minute cancellation." I will say the majority are trying to fill dates...so maybe it's like the bourbon market, reached it's high and coming down.

All I know is.....all of the really good guides I know that were good friends of mine have already hung it up and moved onto making a living in other ways. All of the reputable guides are typically booked a season in advance. If a "guide" has openings they typically are just taking your money to place you in a blind with 5-8 other people you may not know.

I’ve been saying the same thing for a while.

We hunted with a “guide” several years ago on an impoundment close to Engelhard. Blinds in the field were way too close to each other. We shot a handful of shells but the impoundment next to us shot limits which was probably due to extra luck (🌽). If I recall correctly, the guide didn’t actually stay in the blind with us, it was a drop off operation.

I'm enjoying reading the hundreds of comments and reviews being posted online of the latest guide drama down here at the coast. Allegedly an out of town guide with a checkered history was hunting at someone's blind then after the confrontation the blind got torched a day or 2 later..takes a real pos to go setup at or in someone's blind legal or not as far as I'm concerned

And he had all his friends and family leave good reviews after his FB page got spammed with bad reviews 🤦🏼‍♂️😂

Been following that myself. Seen videos and pictures by both sides. Not sure who is telling the truth on this one. Maybe both sides "tampering" with evidence a little to try and make themselves look like their in the right. I would never hunt someone else's blind. But at the same time if it is empty and I set up in the area and the owner comes in 2 hours after daylight and tries to make me leave that ain't right either. A little common courtesy goes a long way. Communicated with a guy this year about his blind. Never asked to use it, just checked to see if he was hunting a particular day. If he was I would stay clear. Now legally no blind law in this area so I could have legally hunted the area. Even with him hunting his blind I could have gotten far enough away to be safe. But I chose to contact him to "do the right thing". Ended up he not only told me to hunt and enjoy he also offered to let me use the blind. I chose not too but told him I would love to talk about helping keep it up and brush it in next year for the opportunity to possibly use it a little.

It’s been entertaining to say the least.

I’ve been following this one as well. It has been quite entertaining to watch these goobers fight over ducks they will likely just throw in the trash later. I’m not sure who is telling the truth on this one. I’m sure the absolute truth will never come out. To the best of my knowledge this was in pamlico county. They could save a lot of lot of confrontations if they just did away with dumb @$$ the blind laws. Nevertheless it has always boggled my mind how “duck hunters” will borderline kill each other over a bufflehead or ONE bluebill

If you build a permanent blind on public property, it’s a public blind.

If you think you own it and/or complain about others using it, you deserve all the ridicule you get.

This is America. If you want to own something, buy it. Otherwise, it isn’t yours.

These are the same type of people that get mad when someone does something to their adjoining private property.

This could be solved by registering public property blinds, ensuring licensed hunters sign up for use of those blinds according to some set of rules, and giving blind builders some sort of additional access since they spent time & effort.

It could also be solved if legally adult men acted like adults and not kindergarteners.

I'm with this, I don't care if you built it and honestly I thought you weren't allowed to build blinds on public land. I see blinds the same way I see trees.

Is shotgunner saying he asks another man for his permission to hunt a public area?

This is a county with blind laws so any blinds that is put in public water is not actually public unfortunately nor is any water within 500 yards of that blind whether it is occupied or not. One of the longest running dumbest laws in the history of duck hunting.
I don’t know the ins and outs of it, but you can guarantee that law is a result of somebody with money and/or influence doing a favor for some friends or their own self-serving interest. If it’s public, it should be public.
