We need to stop sending all our crabs to other states then.....
Increases in commercial harvests in the last few years have put a hurting on the stocks. Not sure what other solution there would be. No different than managing turkey or deer populations everything has a limit.
What in the world are y'all worrying about?!! We've got artificial crab meat!!!
I'm beginning to wonder if that may not be the impetus behind more of these "concerns" than we'd like to believe....

If they wouldn't take the she crabs egged out it would help. But they are not culled. Why? Should be like with lobster.
It use to be that way, at least with every captain I knew. They all culled sooks with eggs...

I always throw sponge crabs back, I thought that was common practice

Should be, but when I buy a bushel I usually find a few. I throw them in the river.

Instead of artificial they can just bring in more imported and false label it like seems to be the norm

Makes 0 sense to me..... maybe we start there. Every crab has to be checked for size, just as easy to throw the sponge back. No different than lobster fisherman notching and throwing back females with eggs.

In the Dungeness fishery in the NW, all females go back - always. I check for sex before I even check size. No sense letting the little witch try to pinch me.
No different than the striped mullet fishery that’s in decline they allow harvest of roe laden mullet in the fall to sell the roe. Zero sense.
