You can throw out a red and white clover mix with rye grain. The clover will germinate with warmer temps and the rye will protect it a bit.
Don't throw food on top of your plots unless you want them stomped into a mudhole.

Twelve Pointer
I planted some cereal rye with clover mixed in back in late Sept. Rye took off and clover germinated well. The Rye is now turning a little yellow, I wouldn't waste your money now though clover may germinate, it won't grow any til spring. Better off waiting until next Sept. or plant some beans/peas in spring. If a small area don't bother with the beans/peas, they'll mow it down as soon as it comes up.
