Fishing with herring

Whole. Live is obviously better but they are hard to keep alive. I have caught a lot of fish on dead ones though with slow trolling or down rods. Unless you are targeting cats the cut bait seems to work better.

We never had trouble keeping Gizzard Shad or Blueback Herring alive in a tank, when striper fishing, after a capful of Hypno was dumped in......is that stuff still around?
It sure helped reduce "rednose" that stripers din't like at times.

We used salt, keep alive and defoamer when needed and have kept them 48 hours or better. All you have to do is have a decent tank, and that tank better have a good filtration system to it, that is key. They are some nasty bastids and will puke their guts up when you dump them in there. If you clean the filters a couple times soon after catching them you are usually good to go. One of the things many use now is called G-Juice, the ones that use it swear by it.

I have never heard of Hypno, but that doesn't mean anything.
