Really long story short, I stalked up on a buck and took a 46 yard slight quartering away shot while prone in a field. The deer actually ran a 200 yard circle around me and I could see my lunenok and arrow still in the deer behind the shoulder as he ran by and went into the woods. I thought I’d give him a bit then go get him piled up. I’m assuming the broadhead stuck in the outgoing shoulder or leg and I single lunged him. Well there was absolutely zero blood that I could find at the point of impact, on the path he ran in the field, on the trail he went into the woods on and nothing on the bank of a steep rocky ditch he had to cross. I looked for 3 hours and found no droplets or anything. I’ve never not recovered a deer, but I’ve only really hunted archery for a few years now. How could there be no blood? I saw the arrow in him and it was right behind the shoulder. Either way it makes me nauseous thinking about it. I know he’s dead and I never found him. It feels greedy, selfish, shameful, and a waste.
I shoot a Excalibur matrix 350 with 125 gr rage crossbow X broadhead with a overall 400 gr arrow. I’ve never been happy with blood trails with this broadhead. I’m considering a fixed blade now.
