First Band

I’ve hunted ducks a lot of years and killed hundreds of duck and different species but today is the first time I’ve killed one with a band. I haven’t even been on a hunt when someone got a band. It was a slow morning and only got a few shots off. Didn’t even see many passing by today. My shooting was off and missed a couple easy shots I was kicking myself for missing. Was about to call it a morning and then had a pair come from the left. I saw which one was the drake so I shot at that one. When the dog brought it back we just threw it on my bag not even seeing the band. I noticed it when I went to put my stuff up. Was banded 9-7-2019 near Montgomery, Lycoming Co Pennsylvania. Was killed in Wilson Co IMG_1789.jpegIMG_1788.jpeg

congrats!! My only banded bird was a wood duck - shot in 2020 during the 4 day October split - came from Ontario. I was blown away, and he is mounted!

Congrats, always a nice surprise to find a band.

My favorite band story is from a GW teal I shot in Kitty Hawk with my cousin when I was in HS. I had shot a banded wood duck the day before back home and 4 mallards and a teal started circling the blind. The teal did what teal do and landed with zero hesitation while the mallards continued to circle for a bit. I was a bit jumpy and about the time the mallards started setting their wings to come in the teal jumped and I panic shot it, obviously those mallards were long gone. My cousin laid into me but you couldn't tell me nothin when the dog brought that bird to hand. Of course my defense was telling him "I saw the band so I shot" knowing good and well I had no clue until that moment.

I would have told him the same thing. He probably wasn’t as mad when he saw the band.

Love the stories. First band for me was while in college at ECU. Floating the Tar, had about a dozen mallards exploded from behind a snag. Picked out some green and folded it dead. Went over to it and didn’t notice the band until it was in the boats floor. Sent # off and like many of our birds, was banded in Linesville, PA.
