Elbow Dysplasia Vets and Experiences

I'm picking up a new GWP foster today that supposedly has elbow dysplasia. The current owner wasn't interested in treating it and the national rescue group asked me and the wife to foster. Its rare in that breed, the first I've heard of it in GWP's. I'll get some answers from my vet next week when we take her in to schedule the spay, but thought I'd ask the group here.

1) Does anyone have a recommendation for a vet in the Raleigh area to evaluate her and do the surgery? I love my vet but he doesn't do much orthopedic work on big dogs.

2) Any experience with the surgery, recovery, and long term prognosis? What did the time frame and recovery period look like?

I would take her to the vet school at NC State and let them handle it.

There is a vet on high house road that has a 24 hour emergency clinic that has a good reputation. The did back surgery on a dog for my daughter.

Your best bet is the vet school at NC State.

As for your other question it will all depend on how severe and what type of surgery they do. Mild cases can be treated with medication, but if they cut it can be arthroscopic or open surgery. They may try to “fix” the joint or opt for replacement, so it will totally depend on what decision is made in how to treat that will determine the recovery period and long term prognosis.

You may need a referral from your vet to see an ortho specialist, but let an ortho specialist take a look.

I’ve trained a few GWP’s, cool dogs.

I like them, though I'm biased of course.

I've read wide reports from "Crate Rest and 3x3minute walks and nothing else for four weeks" to less severe rehab but it seems it depends on the individual case and how bad it is. Odd to see it in a GWP.

Nc State hands down. Only people who would even touch my sister in laws maltise. They spent a ton of $$$ on that little dog.

You may need to have the referral mentioned earlier by Avery Creek but your vet would likely know and not have a problem with it if that is what the dog needs.

For what it’s worth I have a 13yr old Dogo that is starting to show symptoms of hip dysplyasia. The vet said studies had shown promise that vitamin e would help slow the disease. We are currently trying it but can’t yet say if it has helped. I apologize if not the same but thought it might help.Good Luck.

Yeah, if she were 13 they'd probably say "give her pain meds and supplements." The juice isn't worth the squeeze at that age. Unfortunately, she's seven months old or thereabouts. I appreciate the thought tho and will look at those supplements. THey can't hurt.
