Drove by Roxboro DMV today at lunch and was amazed at the line. People parked on both shoulders of the road, line wrapped around the building and across the lot. And I’d bet 90% were from Durham/Orange/Alamance.
Wife tried to make an appt in March. June was the first she could find within 50 miles of Raleigh, She took a day off work, went to Roxboro for walk in and by 4;30 she still didn’t get in. Ended up burning a vacation day to sit at the freakin DMV. It’s really a joke how poorly run it is.

That’s crazy to have to do that and still not get it accomplished!

Carboro I went last week at 5am. 7th in line and got out by 840 with my new shinny CDL permit. 🙂
By the time I left, I bet the line was 80 deep.

I needed to renew my license by tomorrow. The dmv in Rowan county is slammed full every day. I got up at 4:30 this morning and drove to yadkinville. They open up at 7:00 and take walk ins until 8. I got there at 5:50 and was the first one there. By the time they opened there was only 6 people in line. I was out the door at 7:12 and back home by 8:20. I'd much rather drive a little then stand in line.

I blame all the procrastinators. They have jammed it up more than it was previously messed up! This real Id was talked about in 2005- got mine in 2019…..- but all the folks planning to travel all of a sudden have jammed it up

Managed to get an appointment in August. There were quite a few available at various locations this morning. All were on August 11th.

I am due for a DL renewal in late October. I figured I'd get a real ID at the same time.

You can schedule a renewal appointment 6 mos out from your due date, but there's NOTHING available.

One thing I did learn in this process is.....you can renew your US Passport ONLINE. I just did it today. Now, it renders my passport invalid until the new one arrives (4-6 weeks), so I had to be sure we weren't planning to travel anywhere by air in that timeframe.

good info.. I saw the online option and mine expires in September and was going to do that, wonder how long it takes to get it back? Let me know when yours comes in please, I have yet to do the Real ID thing.. and I might have to travel on a moments notice for work.. so can't really afford a lot of downtime.. though I guess you can still fly for now with more hassle.

That's the 4-6 weeks timeline referenced.

I'll report when it arrives. Another cool thing is.....I had one of our AR girls take my photo right here in my office :).

There are 90 days between May 13 and August 11. The DMV releases new appointment dates 90 days in advance. That's why you saw a lot of openings for August 11th.

Well dang. It is always booked up state wide before lunch, but this morning there were a lot of appointments local to me when I checked about 0700. It seems the bigger city locations are always booked. What about staying up and checking right after midnight?

Oh must have missed that part...everything other than real ID online people!!
Only ever other renewal.....renew one time online, the next renewal, you have to go to the office. My next renewal due in Nov., I should be able to do online. I had to go in person last time during covid and I got my Real ID then. They discriminate against us old folks and make us renew every 5 years.

I looked for appointments in a 50 mile radius and all of the more rural locations had zero appointments available. I finally found an opening in Raleigh before my expiration date and it went smooth as silk. NC had said they would not ticket anyone for an expired license during covid but I was not sure how other states would do if I was out of state with an expired NC license, especially with a CC permit, so I wanted to get it done before it expired. I did have to search several times before I got the appointment.

They have said they are voting on letting you drive on extended 2 year expired NCDL
But that will only be good for driving in NC

You will still earn a ticket out of state.
Also no firearms 4473 and no CC on expired DL along with other things that required valid NCDL

It's not a driver's license or DMV, but I was pleasantly surprised how quickly I went through my passport appointment today in King.
The last time I had my driver's license renewed I had to go into the office, and I found a fairly quick appointment in Mt. Airy

Without an appointment, I was prepared for a whole day of sitting at the dmv today. Got there at 0630 and was the second person in line. Opened at 0700 and I was out by 0715... I probably should go buy a lottery ticket with this kind of luck....

During the week I drive by Siler's at about 6:15, give or take and will usually see a handful standing at the door. Yesterday right at the door there was one that had their multi chair/table combo fold up. I'm willing to bet they were there at 5am if not 4 am. When I go back into town for lunch I often see a line out near the road and looping back. This morning I took a load to the sale barn, drove by about 9 and there were 40 or so people.

I had a Real ID in 2011. The procrastination of society is unreal.

call it what ever you want, but I am not going to the DMV if I do not absolutely have to.. I will have to early next year that is when I will worry about my real id.. until then I have a passport.

I didn't go out of my way back then, got it during one of my required in person renewals. Pretty sure most people had a renewal or new license issued in the last 14 years.
