So no one will make the mistake I have made today...make sure to make a appointment with anything that requires a visit..I am on my second stop I was turned away from the first one 5 minutes after opening because they were full...28 people in front of me at the second stop...people with a appointment are called first I sure wish I had this information that I am sharing with you earlier!!! There has got to be a better way!!!

Loosely related...especially if you're in the greater Charlotte or Raleigh area

I hope this settles down after 5/7. My renewal isn't due until late October.....and I can't go in (to renew) prior to 4/30.

This is a :donk:donk:donk:donk-show.
Just book your appointment now.

Privatize it, because the state will never improve the situation. Everything about it is flawed.

Appointment Booking, Number Taking.... Hire a company who can manage it better!
Who ever owns Chick-Fil-A would be a good candidate. They keep that place rolling.

I renewed mine about a year ago and at the time appointments were in the morning walk ins were after lunch. Not sure if it's the same but it's a pia I'd say privatizing it could be a solution but they did that with the license plates and that is only slightly better as I recall.

My renewal is 5/3. Gonna take a day and get to the one in Tarboro early and stand in line!! They only have 1 person working and only the first 20 or so get to even go in. He tells everyone else to come back when he reopens after lunch at 1:00.

Doesn't work well. I recently tried to get an appointment for a DL renewal (online not allowed for me), and the nearest date for any office within 50 miles was 3 months out. This kind of wait has been well documented on NCH&F in other threads on this subject. I ending up going to the local office and waiting, took about 90 minutes total.

The WRC privatized their entire system for licenses and permits and in some ways it is better IMO. In other ways, it sucks much worse than the old in house system. Again, my opinion.....the electronic licenses are nice and buying the basic hunting and fishing stuff seems to work pretty good. But the old Alvin system was head and shoulders above Go Outdoors for the odd ball stuff. Alvin had a great, easy to use reporting system for WCAs. Go Outdoors still does not have anything to handle the required reporting and we are still limping along with an interim spreadsheet/email system that is best described as terrible.

Generally, I would agree that privatizing the drivers license renewal system makes sense but if the same folks plan the conversion that run the current flawed system, it could be just as bad if not worse.

My wife and I renewed our licenses last year. We made appointments at a dmv office in a nearby smaller town where there’s less activity and we were both done in less than 30 minutes. It was about a 20 mile drive but worth the trip.

Mine had to be renewed in person. I didn’t care enough to keep watching the page online everyday for an appointment. Got to my neighboring DMV at 11:35 AM, got checked in by scanning the QR code and rolled out at exactly 3:35 PM with my paper copy in hand. I just stayed in my truck and organized the heck out of my center console, waiting for text updates from DMV.

This is the way to do it.

I always make my appointments one county over. I’m usually in and out in less than 45 min.

My time is to valuable to spend all day at the DMV. I’ll just take my chances with an expired license before I do that.

We went in person in January. Drove over to a less populated county and got there before 12. As we were checking in, one of the 2 ladies working there came out and announced to the crowd that she was going to lunch at 12 for an hour and 15 minutes and when she returns, the other woman was going for the same amount of time. SO we just left.

They should pay them piece work. By the looks of each of them, reducing time that they could eat by 45 minutes would be a great start!

Much easier up here, had to do my license and health card last week, went to our version of the DMV, walked in, clicked some buttons on the kiosk, spat me out a number and 45 minutes later had them both done. Multiple people ahead of me, but a smooth system

I had posted in one of those earlier threads about the Graham DMV.

Sometimes as I’m going by I glance over at that office at 730 in the morning and there are already at least 50 cars there, 30 minutes before it opens.

Saw on the news last night when I was at the gym that Stein essentially fired the head of the DMV and is in process of hiring a new director with change management and large organization experience. They are currently looking at Arizona as a model and the software that they have recently adopted.

For all the BS the NC DMV is ranked (whatever that means) as 25th in the country.. AZ is 4th so following that model would appear, on the surface to be a big improvement but the devil is always in the details of how they get from here to there.

Whoever designed the appointment system does not know how to make it customer friendly. The website says to check for available appointments. They tell you to check each day to look for openings from people cancelling. On the map, it shows which DMV offices have openings. The problem is that it does not indicate when that opening is available at quick glance. Offices with no appointments are black dots and offices with blue dots supposedly have appointments. I say supposedly because when you click on the blue dots, many of them will say no appointments for next 90 days. What often happens is that they release the appointments for 90 days out that morning and most are gone within minutes.

I would have designed it so you could select a time frame to search. Narrow the search to any openings in the next week, next month or other custom range. If you don't do it that way, at least color the dots on the maps for different time frames. Something like red dots for one day, yellow dots for one week, and green for one month.

When I was looking for appointments, I had to open every blue dot and look for open dates. Then you couldn't conveniently click back one page to look at a different location. You had to restart the search every time.

Maybe Ol Wayne Goodwin will work his magic at the DMF next. I would say he couldn't make it worse but after his tenure I am not so sure.

Left the house at 1435. No appointment. Drove to a DMV inside city limits but, not right near where I live.(They take walk-ins after 1200) Walked up to the counter. Had to wait about 5 minutes to get a number. Sat down. Waited about 10 minutes. Number was called. Spent about 8 minutes with examiner. License will be in the mail. Paper good to June 5th. Drove back toward home and was at a local restaurant to order take-out at 1610.
I think it's about finding a better PLACE to go. I'm just happy I should be able to renew online next time. Shouldn't have to go to DMV for 16 years. Maybe by then the system will be better.
Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Wilmington, Asheville, Charlotte and any other place within a 30 minute drive of there, probably just sucks. Too many people to serve and DMV was too far behind to catch up because they stayed closed too long during Covid and, they have too many "unmotivated" employees. Find a place to go where there are more "motivated" employees.
Find a reason for a day trip. Travel to a less populated place.
1. No, you can't make an appointment more than 90 days out.
2. You CAN renew your license up to 6 months in advance.
3. That gives you 9 months to make a plan or appointment.
From what I hear, DMV kiosks in grocery stores may be happening in the near future.
Good luck, everyone.

Drove by Roxboro DMV today at lunch and was amazed at the line. People parked on both shoulders of the road, line wrapped around the building and across the lot. And I’d bet 90% were from Durham/Orange/Alamance.

My wife went to High Point from Durham yesterday for her real ID. She had made an appointment online about 2 months ago.
Once there she said it went quickly.

My DL expires 5-15-25. Ive had my Real ID for years and just needed a renewal. I went to the DMV this morning in the county I live at 6:45, they open at 7. I had no appointment. The lady opened the door at 7 and said. "Ill take the first 6 DL renewals, if you are in line with no appt for a real ID, you will not be able to be counted until after 12. All normal business related to actual licenses is handled first". I was out of there with a polite interaction by 7:30.
