diversifying plots

Thinking about next deer season. Past few years planted mixtures of oats/wheat/cereal rye, and some red clover and had deer in them a decent amount. Have also incorporated some winter peas but never enough quantity to really tell how much they’ve been of use. Plan on keeping that mixture to hunt over in a few small plots. What else do yall recommend planting to get some more variety across several small plots? Primarily focused on early fall through late winter

It sounds like some really good plots you're planting now . If you wanted to make some more specific for the early, middle or late season you could add cow peas, soy beans or iron and clay peas for early season. Brassicas or a few rows of corn for late season. For mid season just throw out a bigger pile of corn than the next guy and remember to fertilize hard with nitrogen on those grain plots for extra draw.

Best thing I’ve planted that performs great year after year is cereal rye grain. I think the key is having it up and green before cropland wheat is planted. Last fall mine was eat down to about nothing. I also like any white clover and I think crimson clover is a waste of money.

My family had food plots in Michigan and turnips/sugar beets got the tops nipped off late fall and the roots dug up all winter. Great crops if they grow well in NC

I’d maybe add some turnips. We’ve been planting 7 top, doesn’t really make a bulb just a big leafy head. 50 lb bag of turnips is relatively cheap and covers a lot of ground, don’t put in too much though they don’t like to be crowded.

We’ve had same luck with winter peas. Unless you do a lot of em don’t expect much, they love em and they don’t handle browse pressure well.
